Beatrice had sworn never to let a man into her life again because of the heartbreak she got from her past relationship and men have tried to get through to her but she wouldn't let them. But a certain man was hell bent on winning her over and he was ready to take the brunt for it.
"Get lost and don't call my phone again." Beatrice screamed into the phone.
"Hello...please can you just listen....." The caller tried to talk.
"I'll have you arrested. I swear it. Get lost." She screamed again, interrupting the caller.
Her door swung open and her friend walked in.
"Hey Bea, who were you screaming at?" Nicole asked her.
"No one of importance. It's just some lunatic who wouldn't know his place." Beatrice responded.
"Was he rude to you?" Nicole asked again.
Beatrice scoffed and rolled her eyes. "Well, in a manner of speaking, he wasn't rude but calling me when I've clearly warned him not to, is very rude." Beatrice said.
Nicole sat still for some time, staring at her friend as she spoke with hate and anger for the male gender. She thought of the best way to advise her friend without pissing her off the more.
"Bea, don't you think it's about time you let go of your hate and move on with your life?" Nicole asked as Beatrice quieted down.
"Move on from what exactly?" Beatrice replied with a frown.
"I don't know.....maybe from everything." Nicole stuttered a response. She knew that she had already gotten on Beatrice's nerves.
Beatrice stood from her bed and fixed her angry gaze on Nicole's face.
"Do you have a problem with the way I've chosen to live my life?" She asked Nicole.
"No, don't get me wrong. I just think that you deserve better." Nicole responded.
"What's better than being alone and living your life to the fullest?" Beatrice asked again.
"Maybe, if you could just let down those walls a little and let a man into your life, you might be happier than you already are." Nicole said.
Beatrice rolled her eyes. "Ain't you supposed to have my back as my friend?" She said with her voice slightly raised. Nicole tried to respond but Beatrice cut in. "You think having a man in my life would make me happy? For three years I did that and what did I get in return?" Beatrice shouted in anger.
"Bea, calm down a little. I'm just worried about you. All I want is what's best for you, nothing more." Nicole said in an attempt to calm the angry Beatrice.
"Of course, you want what's best for me. Is this because you're married to your perfect Franklin and I'm not married to any? Is that what this is all about? What makes you think that I need or even want a man in my life?" Beatrice kept throwing angry questions at Nicole and when she couldn't bear having her in the room again, she yanked the door open and asked her to leave.
"Come on Bea, it shouldn't get to this. I'm sorry for saying the wrong things." Nicole apologized.
"You should leave. Go and take care of your husband and child. I don't need a babysitter." Beatrice retorted with the door still open.
Nicole stood up and left the room. Beatrice went back to the bed and lay down. She felt bad for sending Nicole away but the pressure from her friend and her mother was frustrating. She had been with Mike for three years and after tons of marriage promises, she found out that he had a fiancee and was already planning a wedding. Beatrice had been hospitalized for some days and when she finally found her feet, she had sworn never to let any other man into her life and for two years, she had kept her word and now it seemed like everyone around her wanted her to let go of the past.
Still, in deep thought, her phone rang and she jerked up and screamed out when she saw who the caller was. It was the same guy she had warned to stop calling earlier.
"Oh my God!!! Does he have a death wish?" She asked herself and picked up the call. "What do you want from me?" She barked at the caller.
"Hi, I'm sorry. I got your number from one of your social handles and I just wanted us to get to know each other." The caller said.
"I'm the last person who gives a care for who you are. Stop bothering me with your calls." Beatrice warned.
"I'm Joshua by name. Why don't we start from there?" The caller said again, disregarding the warning from Beatrice.
"Well Joshua, you can go to hell." Beatrice snapped at him.
She could've ended the call then but for some unknown reason, she let him talk even after warning and swearing at him.
"Why don't I come to you so we can talk and get to know each other? I think it's much better than going to hell." Joshua said and Beatrice scoffed trying to suppress her giggles.
"Are you trying to be funny?" She asked him.
"No, not at all. I just want to get to know you, Bea." He responded.
"It's Beatrice. You don't get to call me Bea." She said harshly.
"Alright Beatrice, can we meet up? I could come pick you up." He asked again.
"I don't need a chauffeur, I have a car." She snapped at him.
Beatrice said she would call him back, then she dialed Nicole's cell and after apologizing for her earlier behavior, she sought her advice.
"I think you should go and see him. Dress nicely though." Nicole advised.
"If a simple pair of jeans and shirt can't suffice, then he can go to the devil. I'm not seeking anyone's approval." Beatrice responded and ended the call. She redialed for Joshua and chose a place for the meeting.
Beatrice arrived earlier than Joshua and she chose a table from where she would be able to see him first if he should walk into the restaurant. Moments later, a man walked in and strode towards her. Beatrice gasped with surprise. Joshua wasn't the nitwit she had been expecting to see. He was tall, handsome and he was certainly rich from the way he carried himself. His charisma was everything and Beatrice admitted to herself that she would've certainly fallen head over heels for him if it hadn't been for her vows.
"I'm sorry for keeping you waiting. I had an emergency at work." Joshua apologized as he took a seat.
"No... It's fine, you're here now." Beatrice managed to respond, still wondering how a person could be that handsome.
Joshua wasn't a boring person. They conversed and Beatrice laughed at his jokes. Hours later, they headed to their separate homes with Joshua promising to call her later.
When she got home, she dialed Nicole's cell and she picked up at the first ring.
"How was your date?" Nicole asked.
"It wasn't a date, Nic." Beatrice said in defense.
"So what do you call an outing where two people of opposite genders doll up and go out to eat and talk?" Nicole asked.
"I don't know. It could be anything but not a date for sure." Beatrice replied laughing. They talked about Joshua's looks and how gentle and nice he had been to Beatrice.
"This could be it, Bea. I think you should give him a chance." Nicole said after Beatrice had finished her tale.
"Hell no. I don't see myself falling in love with him, Nic." Beatrice said in denial.
"Never say never, Bea. He could be the one." Nicole teased.
"Get off my phone." Beatrice responded and Nicole laughed.
As she got off the call, Beatrice sat in thought for some minutes. Joshua was nice but she wasn't sure if giving in would be the right call to make.
"Well, it wouldn't hurt to try again. Would it?" She asked no one in particular, as she was alone in the room.
