It's been said that in a family, there's always this one person who never does what is expected of him. This person tends to not do things according to the patterns that have been laid out for the family. Such a person or persons are often referred to as the black sheep of the family.
Judy was said to be the black sheep in his family due to how rash his behavior had been. After graduating from high school, he refused to go on with his education. He would rather stay back in his room, playing video games and seeing him like this, broke his mother's heart. He was the one son she had cherished so much above others and not being able to bend him to her will was frustrating.
"Judy, open up!!!" Alicia, Judy's mother, shouted while banging her fist on his bedroom door.
As she raised her balled fist to hit the door again, it opened and Judy stared at her. Alicia pushed past him and walked into his room.
"Mum, could you please be more gentle when you knock on my door? It could go down any moment soon if you keep doing this." Judy said after shutting the door.
One look at his mother's angry face, Judy chuckled and sat down on his bed.
"What's with the frown? Anyway, it doesn't suit you, but I'm sure you already know this." He said to the mother.
"Judy, why are you hellbent on breaking my heart? How could you refuse your dad's offer to work in his firm?" Alicia asked him, her voice slightly raised.
"Could you not do that, mum? Straining your voice won't do you any good. Did Dad send you here to talk to me?" Judy asked her.
Alicia didn't respond to his question. There was a sad look on her face. Judy poured her a glass of orange juice he had been taking before she came knocking. He guided it to her mouth and she took a sip.
"I'm sorry that I'm not living up to your expectations but that doesn't mean that I don't want to. Why can't you and Dad let me fulfill my destiny in my way? I've got big dreams for myself too, besides staying home and watching you frown." Judy said to her.
"Judy, I want what's best for you and that's why I keep pleading with your dad to go easy on you, but if you keep disobeying him, I don't think I can save you from his wrath. You're such a bright kid and if only you would just listen to us, things would certainly be good." His mother spoke bitterly.
"Mum, you make it seem like I don't even put an effort towards my future. Tell Dad to help me out and you'll see that I have a great and perfect talent, but if you both won't listen to me, well, I don't know what to say about that." Judy responded to his mother.
Alicia stood from where she sat and walked towards the door. Judy held the door open for her and when she had walked out of the room, she turned to face Judy;
"So, nothing I say will make you change your mind?" She asked him.
"I'm sorry mum. And don't you think you and Dad are fighting the wrong person? I mean, I'm not the only one with the evil bean living inside of him in this house." Judy replied.
There was a distorted look on Alicia's face as she stared at him, wondering what he had meant.
"Never mind, Mum." He said and shut the door.
In a family of three sons, Judy was the one who got most of the attention. His elder brother, Smith, lived his life whichever way he wanted and no one said a thing about it. Mike, on the other hand, was barely twelve, so he was a little or no trouble at all for their parents, but Judy was the only one who would get scolded for wanting something for himself.
Judy dreamed of being a famous app programmer, he had a lot that he was working on and all he needed was sponsorship, which wouldn't have been a big deal to the father, seeing that he was very buoyant. But, his father wanted something different from him and this was where the whole issue came in. He wouldn't do what his father wanted and his father, in turn, wouldn't pay attention to his needs as well.
Seeing his brother, Smith, do whatever he wanted and not get scolded for once, pissed Judy off. It was as if Smith never existed in the family and he had his way all the time.
"Your life is so great because no one bats an eye when you do the things you do, and you feel so good about it. Don't you?" Judy had said to Smith one of the days when he had caught him stealing alcohol from the refrigerator, which was a no-no act in their family.
"Hey, Judy, you shouldn't beat yourself because you're getting all the attention. I think it's a good thing for you, you should be elated." Smith had responded to him.
"I see. Well, I'm not a kid anymore and if no one is going to stand up to you, I will." Judy said again.
"You're fighting a lost battle boy. Just so you know." Smith said and went into his room, leaving the angry Judy, with his chest heaving.
A few days later their father, Mr John, called the whole family together to discuss Judy's unruly behavior. As the meeting dragged on, Judy got pissed and stood to his feet, ignoring his mother's signal not to.
"Dad, could you just stop with the whole complaint? Why do you keep acting like I'm the problem this family has when you know that I'm not?" Judy was so angry that the father had called him the black sheep of the family.
"Shush now, Judy. Now's not the time for this." Alicia whispered, tugging on Judy's clothes to make him sit but Judy shrugged her hands off.
"There has never been a better time and place for this than here and now. Do you have a problem with me, Dad? I don't get it, I have something that I want too, unlike some persons who wouldn't even move a muscle to get something done for themselves and we all know this, but yet, you choose to ignore it and fight me. Why are you channeling that anger to me?" Judy asked the Father who just watched him without saying a word.
"Judy, please, that's enough." Alicia pleaded.
"No, it's not. I've kept all the laws in this house but Smith hasn't done so for even a day. He smokes as much as he wants, drinks, and comes home drunk and you both know this. You can't lie that you don't, but you'd rather pretend not to see it, you won't even bat an eye when he hangs out with those crazy friends of his or when he brings them home. But you'll take it out on me. Why's that?" Judy let out all the anger heaved in his heart.
Mr John couldn't give a response to him and his mom kept her face buried in her palms. Judy stared at them and sighed loudly.
"I guess I won't be getting an answer. Anyway, we all know who the problem is and it's about time you both pay attention to it. Stop treating me like I'm the problem child when you know I'm not. You all know that I'm not the elephant in this house, he is." Judy said and pointed his finger at Smith, who didn't even bat an eye.
The room was so quiet, you could hear a pin drop. Judy excused himself and went into his room, leaving the rest to reminisce on his words.
