“What is going to be your New Year's resolution? I plan on learning the piano and perfecting my ballet moves. Soon, I'll be dancing like a swan and everyone will pay to watch me.” Gleaming, Sisee suddenly jumped in front of her friends and popped the question as she twirled.
“Mum says it isn't ladylike to climb trees.” I'm turning ten so henceforth, no more monkeys jumping on the bed.” Benada curtsied and all three girls laughed.
“Like last year, I'm not making any resolutions.” Leah blurted. “I think resolutions are just boring words people don't stick to.” She rolled her eyes. “I want to experience something more magical this year.”
“Yeah, right,” Sisee smirked. “Well, you are still not cooler than the rest of us. Good night girls.” She ran off to a cozy-looking duplex glimmering with ornaments from the holiday decorations.
It was the last day of December and the three girls were walking back home from rehearsals for the neighborhood's New Year recital. The bright street lamps adorned with electrifying lights, dreamy music notes emanating from each house they passed, and shimmering reindeer stuffings every twenty feet had them soaking up in the euphoria of the moment.
“No, please. Let me go with one of the other two girls.” Primrose peeked from behind a cherry tree where they hovered. “I need just one resolution please.” She pleaded like her life depended on it. Well, it sort of did. How was she going to do life as a weaver with only one wing?
“What? Did you hear that Carla?” Zeenah snickered and faced her partner. “She needs just one resolution.” She mocked. “You want to be a super-weaver just like us! How bold of you.” Zeenah turned around and flapped her perfect pair of silver wings shimmering beneath the moonlight. “Come on Carla, we are just in time for Sisee and Benada’s resolutions. With this final, collection, we are going to be grandweavers. No more lurking around little humans.”
Primrose lowered her gaze and sighed as she watched the two super-weavers shimmer into the night. “Could anything be worse than being stuck as a lurker for another year?” she turned and began to waft in a crooked way, her single wing barely keeping her afloat.
“Okay great.” Primrose hissed as her only wing got stuck between a small branch. She had managed to trail Leah back home. “Now I’ll just sit here and wait for some miracle to happen.” she yanked her wing from the branch and sat among the flowers that surrounded Leah’s home. “The girl doesn't even believe in making New Year’s resolutions.” Primrose was busy talking to herself when the lights from Leah’s room came on.
She stayed quiet watching the bedroom window. Moments later, the lights went off and the window stretched open. Primrose watched as Leah came to stay by her window sill to look up at the sky.
Primrose just sat there in amazement at this young little human. “Such a beautiful creature with no idea how much power as little as her thoughts have got. Okay okay Prim, here is your chance.” She tapped her head and took a little crooked flight to lean beside Leah’s window.
Leah peeked from her window. She thought she had seen a tiny spark. Primrose quickly ducked and stayed still until Leah withdrew back to the sill. Primrose was having a hard time steadying herself when she felt a quick swoop and everything turned black.
“Aha. Gotchya.” Leah’s eyes beamed when she opened her palm to reveal the tiniest creature she had ever seen. “What are you?” She poked Primrose with her pinkie finger but she didn't move.
“Don't play dead. I saw you Just now alright.” Leah smirked as she fondled Primrose’s wing.
“No no not my wing.” Primrose jumped making Leah stagger.
“Wow. This is so cool. Are you one of those cool stuff from the internet? Some sort of mini robot or a drone in disguise?” Leah’s curiosity piqued. She was ecstatic while Primrose raised an eyebrow. “Oh! You are a fairy.”
“Fairy? Oh, I wish. That’s like the coolest stuff in whimsy. I'm a resolution weaver.”
“Whimsy? A resolution weaver?” Leah quizzed.
“Yess!” Primrose pressed both ears and rolled her eyes. “Okay let me break it down real quick for you. Perhaps you could change your mind about the New Year's resolution.”
“So, I come from Whimsy. A place where everything whimsical you can ever think of comes alive. In my tribe, we are Resolution Weavers. We collect New Year’s resolutions from all over the world and weave them into the fabric of time. But there are levels to this thing.” Primrose sat on Leah’s palm watching her eyes twinkle in astonishment.
“I used to be wingless until I collected my first resolution. Maybe one day I’ll make it to Super or even Grandweaver. But for now, If I collect one more resolution before midnight, I’ll have another wing.
“Hmmh. It looks like this means everything to you.” Leah pouted.
“So is that a yes? Will you make a New Year resolution?” Primrose nodded with pleading eyes.
“Alright okay.” Leah closed her eyes. As soon as she did, she saw white silhouettes clouding her shut eyes. She opened them and her mouth was agape.
Blue translucent lights like ice swayed through the air lightly from Leah’s view enveloping Primrose’s little form. Like tiny fireworks, Leah watched as Primrose developed another wing.
Primrose peeped her back and the most beautiful pair of silver wings she had ever seen was fluttering softly.
“Wow,” Leah whispered. “Look at you now.” She teased Primrose as she poked her wings.
“Stop it already. I better hurry before midnight or the grand weaver will not accept your resolution.”
Leah stretched her hand and Primrose began to flap. Still floating in the air, she looked back. “May I ask what your resolution was?” she said.
Leah pouted. ”well, I resolved to make resolutions every year as long as we both meet right here.”
“But that sounds like a wish”
“Perhaps you aren't just a resolution weaver after all. You are now my fairy.” Leah smiled. “I’m still cooler than Sisee and Carla.”
Smiling, Primrose shook her head. She glided back and kissed Leah on her nose. “See you next year then,” She whispered.
