My friend Mark had been undergoing treatment for cancer for the past four years.
When I went to visit him with some of my other friends one day, we were chatting about our hopes and ambitions when we were children. Mark cocked her chin in the direction of the window. He doesn't seem to be paying attention, and his tone is rebuking.
"I have always wished that I had a remote control red toy vehicle, but if I express what I want on my birthday—I couldn't tell anyone this for fear that my wish would not come true. I always wish that I had a remote control red toy car. Because of this, I never owned a red toy car that had a radio when I was a kid "
he stated.
It had been a few days since my trip to see Mark. I was standing in line at the ice cream store to get my go-to treat when all of a sudden I spotted the bright red toy car displayed in the shop's window.
It came with a message that read,
"Don't forget to fill in the coupon we will give you when you buy your ice cream, maybe this remote control car can be yours at the end of the draw."
The note was tied to the item next to it.
The words of Mark popped into my head right away. During the course of a few weeks, I made it a point to routinely purchase ice cream and use the coupons that they gave me. I haven't won any of the draws. It was my fault that Mark didn't get this red automobile as a gift from me.
By the conclusion of the fourth week, I had resolved to accept that there was no chance that I would win the lotto.
I had a conversation with the proprietor of the shop and requested that they offer me one of these automobiles.
The shopkeeper remarked that after buying ice cream every day for four weeks and filling out the coupons, he noticed that I glanced at the results of the lottery with great excitement.
Then, while staring directly into my eyes, he said, "Tell me, why do you want this car so badly?" "he inquired.
I proceeded to tell him about my friend while ignoring the tears that were welling up in my eyes. He was extremely taken aback by that. He added, "I will ship the toy car you desire to the address you supplied," and it was clear that he was intending to do just that.
I was so happy that I came home that I forgot to take the check that I had written with me when I placed it on the table.
The following day, when I went to see Mark, his eyes were shining with excitement. He exclaimed with the enthusiasm of a young boy as he pointed to the red toy car that he was holding and said, "Look." "After all these years of waiting, my desire has finally come true, and it's exactly how I wanted it to be!"
The following day, the postman gave me an envelope to take with me. After opening it, I immediately began reading:
"Dear Steve, both of my parents also passed away from cancer less than a year after they were diagnosed. I put in a lot of effort for both of them, but to tell you the truth, I wouldn't have been able to accomplish anything without the support and assistance of my close friends. I have always considered it a blessing to have genuine friends. Mark is fortunate to count you as a buddy among his circle of people. Best wishes. Norm”
The letter was written by the proprietor of the ice cream store that was mentioned earlier. The check that I had left on his desk was also included in the envelope that I had given to him.
