A lifelong friendship - Creative Nonfiction in The Ink Well: Prompt #16

in #hive-1707982 years ago

Life has taught me that with the passage of time we make friends, some find it easy, others a little difficult.

I remember, when I was in the first year of high school, I had no friends, my body was full of warts, they are small granular bumps on the skin, mostly on the fingers and hands. Nobody liked to get close to me, they thought it was a contagious disease. After school, I would always go to my grandmother's house, I would tell her about the day's events, she would get angry, it hurt her heart for all the scorn I received.

One morning, we were in biology class, we were asked to do a project on the parts of the human body, we had to make a group of three people to do the project. Sitting at my desk, I only thought of approaching a classmate to team up with him, I felt his contempt, I resigned myself to do my work alone. Suddenly, I felt a warm hand touching my shoulder, I turned to see, it was one of the girls in the classroom, she approached me with her pencil tucked in her huge afro and her very thin voice told me: "Hello, you already made a group with someone, my sister and I are forming a group and we are missing one person", I was so surprised that she turned to see me and made me the invitation, I replied: "yes", from then on, after class, she, her sister and I, went to the library to investigate. They were brunettes, Sergia and Emira, one did not look like the other, Sergia always with the pencil tucked in the afro, walked very fast, as if she was always talking about her favorite sport; however, Emira was passive with a smile always on her lips and never said no.

Sergia liked to invent a lot, she told me: "Why don't we take advantage and go home for a while", I answered: "no, because before going I have to ask permission, my mom is not at home, she is at work", Sergia very insistent told me: "but let's go for a while, at half past eleven in the morning you come with your mom, so she doesn't find out and doesn't scold you", so she convinced me, I went with her and her sister. Every time we went out early I went with the brunettes to their house to study or to play.

On one occasion my mother arrived home at noon, she started to distribute the food to my father and my brothers. When it was one o'clock in the afternoon she realized that I had not arrived, she went to her room, visualized my class schedule and realized that I should have been back to school an hour ago. She was so worried that she went to the high school to ask for freshman section A, where she was told that they were leaving at ten in the morning, her chest was heaving with despair, she felt that her breath was not flowing, so she left the school, she saw a lady selling candy at the door of the school and asked her if she had not seen her daughter, the lady replied, "yes, I saw her with some twins going to the square".

She took a deep breath and took control of her emotions, she was walking and asking if they had seen me, until she met Mrs. Lucia, she was very fond of us and asked her: "have you seen my daughter, she was with some twins", she answered: "ah, yes, I saw them, you see that white house with green fences, she must be there, because there live some twins". My mother went to the house, when she arrived, she lowered her head and picked up a stone from the floor with which she touched the fence, at that moment Mrs. Emira came out, she greeted my mother "Hello woman, how are you, what brings you to these parts", my mother told her: "I am looking for my daughter, they told me she left school at ten in the morning with some twins, do you have any?". Mrs. Emira answered: "yes, Carmencita, your daughter is here, always when they leave school early they come home, they spend the morning joking", the lady of the house called me: "Carmencita, your mother is looking for you", when my mother saw me she hugged me and kissed me, she exhorted me saying: "do not do this again, you have to let me know when you come so I know where you are", with a nod of the head in synonym of obedience I said "yes".

From that moment, the twins Sergia and Emira made a great friendship with me that has lasted in time, we are married women, despite the distance we are always in contact.

Oh wow, that must have been hard for you to talk to your mother about your activities, and it must have been hard for her to not know where you were. The twins sound like they were some interesting friends!

I loved your story. For going without your mother's permission to play with your friends, you earned yourself a scolding. have a good night.

Thank you for sharing this charming creative nonfiction story in The Ink Well, @lrscarmen. It is a classic coming-of-age story, when kids are unsure of how much freedom they have and so they behave as if it is in short supply and do things without their parents' permission.

It's heartwarming that the twins chose to pair with you when everyone decided to stay away. I'm glad you're still friends till date.
