Agnes stood majestically and with her hands akimbo looking at the notes she pasted on her wall. This time she had promised herself not to renege from the things she planned to do in the coming year. She had tried this in previous years but before the first month ended, she must have derailed. So this time, she strategically placed the note on her bedside. On second thought, she decided to remove the note so that her friends wouldn't know the aspect of life she wants to live in the coming year, moreover, one of her New Year resolutions included not hanging out with friends. She feels that her friends might be disappointed in her decision.
“Where else should I place this note”? She thought. At least the note should be placed in an open place where she could be easily seen whenever she's at home. With this, she reasoned that it would serve as a guide to the new life she has resolved to live.
She decided to place the piece of paper in her jotter that was lying on the table with other books. She opened it and as she was about to insert the piece of paper, she remembered that it was not a wise decision to do so because most people do have access to the jotter, especially in the church.
New Year resolutions should not be a hidden thing, at least, if it's open, it will help one to be accountable and if another feels threatened, then the person who has resolved a new leaf should not be bothered. In the case of Agnes, it was obvious that she was afraid of what her friends would think about her. Making decisions that will affect your relationship with a close friend is what a lot of people are not able to do. This is the reason many people decide to die in silence even in their discomfort.
One of the problems Agnes faced was her inability to save her money. She realized that if she put her friends behind, it would be easy for her to do so. Hence, being the most reserved among her five friends, she hardly says her mind on issues. As a result of this, she decided to put her friends aside but in a way that would not affect their relationship. On many occasions, she has been the one funding the lifestyles of her friends. She has rendered help to them most times depriving herself of some privileges yet, they seem not to be grateful. Any day Agnes could not meet up to their bidding, they would talk ill of her which would make Agnes feel bad about it.
One of the traits of this tall, ebony-looking girl is that she doesn't like it when people talk evil about her hence, she strives as much as possible to ensure that she keeps a clean slate with everyone that comes her way. She's an easygoing person and very hardworking. Most of her earnings come from online platforms where works. In one of her meetings with her aunt, she complained of her friend's attitude especially when it comes to finances. Her Aunty queried her of not putting her friends through the jobs so at least, they can make their own money. She explained to her that she did put them through but they complained they couldn't break through it. Feeling disappointed, her Aunt suggested that she approach the girls on her behalf and caution them from coming close to her. Immediately, Agnes heard about it, she pleaded with her aunt and promised her that she would handle the situation by herself.
This is the fifth year, Agnes has tried within her effort to put her friends behind yet she lacks the courage to do so and she wouldn't love this to continue in the new year.
Still thinking of where to place the note around her tiny single room, she decided to place it at the door to her apartment. No one knew how she got the courage to do so, so she took a jar of gum she bought the previous night walked up to her door post and pasted her New Year resolutions there.
The first on the list was “turning away from evil friends that always beg for money”
Not long after, her friends came around and they read Agnes’ New Year's resolutions and immediately knew that they were evil friends. Henceforth, their friendship ended and she was able to achieve her plans for the new year.
