Beyond the Window

It all starts with a blank space, right before you get sucked into another world. That was what the word, sleep implied right?
I loved sleeping. There was no other moment,no other thing or device to get me away from reality. The books and movies I watched and read could only do so much.

Staring at my phone with my ear pods on, I could hear the background noise coming from my roommates. I had no idea what they were doing nor did I wish to know.

A bright white light flashed across the room and it caught my eyes, blinding me for some seconds.. It was raining and that light was lightning. Seconds later, the sound of thunder followed suit. Tilting my head to the left,I stared right out of the window,at the sky. I was so grateful for getting a bed space near a window. I felt so isolated and that's what I wanted. But the thing about being alone is the expectation of just someone or anyone to be able to see right through you. It's like faking the act of not needing someone. Unfortunately, being misread in whatever situation has been deemed normal for me.
I didn't like people. They tend to judge and laugh and hate and do evil things.
The world was filled with people. I didn't like the world either.

Rubbing my temple,I closed my eyes and stared at the sky. I was so tired. The voices of my roommates sounded so vibrant and full of energy.
I wish, I just wish someone would be able to understand me. I wish I had someone, anyone to take this odd and terrible feeling off my chest.
Taking a deep breath,I tried to steady my over-beating heart as I drifted into a comfortable darkness. Sleep alas

My eyes shot open as I heard a window creak slowly. I had no idea why I had woken up. Perhaps something had pulled me from that slumber. Who else than the devil himself? Aiming for my life. The one moment I had to escape this evil world gone for the day.
Sighing,I adjusted my eyes to the darkness. It was still raining, the lightning and thunder crackles were still going on. A sound to my left, made me slowly turn my head.

I felt my heart leap. Like a rock,I stayed. The window had been forced open and a creepy looking creature almost human was there, inside the room.
Lightning flashed again, enabling me to see his face. He was short, about 4 ft 9. I watched him bring a cloth out of the bag he held. It was a hoodie?
Not any hoodie? My roommate's hoodie?
With utter confusion written all over my face, I watched the creature as he pulled a knife out of the same bag and started shredding the clothing.

This was madness. Why would this break into my room just to rip a hoodie apart? I couldn't make sense of it. I couldn't make sense of anything. My head ached, I could fall off this bed any minute. But I couldn't.
I should close my eyes. I shouldn't let him notice me,notice that someone saw him and watched the entire thing. I should play asleep.
But what if he decides to attack? How would I protect myself and everyone?
I didn't like my roommates, I despised them to say the least.
The idea of someone getting hurt when I had every chance to prevent or save them from it just makes me evil, doesn't it?
It makes me the world which I despised also.

A jolt brought my focus back,I lost track of time. "Crap", I whispered. The creature snapped his head in my direction and stared at me right in the eyes.

I was done for
What better way to go than being killed and eaten?

The creature smirked, snapped his fingers and made his way out. He didn't do so much as to look back before fleeing into the night.
Jumping out of my bed,I struggled for air. I couldn't breathe,I couldn't.
My noise must have woken my roommates because suddenly the three of them were both at my side urging me to take deep breaths and rubbing my back.
I couldn't calm down!
What was that!?
What did the finger snapping mean?
Was I on a death roll?

After about thirty minutes, I was better. Unable to talk,I just stared at the wall behind a roommate's head. My brain was trying to process everything at once.

Dear Lord, I know I said I was tired of the world. But that didn't necessarily mean I wanted to die at the hands of a monster! How about death by sleep!? A simply go to sleep and never wake up.

I let out a sigh and stared at Drea. The owner of the hoodie. "Your hoodie", I murmured, looking as her eyebrows go up in weariness and confusion. Moving my head,I pointed to the floor about eight feet from my bed.

There it was.
The last bits of her Teen titans hoodie.

Drea rose from where she was, moving slowly towards the clothing. "How?", Her lips trembled as she asked.
When I didn't answer, she shot her eyes towards me. "What happened!?"
"I saw something", I muttered, just below my breath

The next night,I trembled. Couldn't get myself to sleep. Earlier today,I had told my three roommates about the creature I saw. They all thought I had gone mad.
"Oh and what else did you see, fangs?", Elsa had said.
It was as expected. I had come with the conclusion that they wouldn't believe.
Sierra had said my books are getting way over my head. Maybe she was right. Probably.
Maybe what I saw yesterday wasn't anything.

Assuring myself,I wasn't running mad. I closed my eyes and urged myself to drift into the darkness. Maybe I'll be in heaven when I'm awake.
The sound was little, almost silent but I could hear it. It was a knock. And it went twice,a pause then once. It was some sort of pattern, calling me. I knew I shouldn't be going. I should call for help, alert someone.
The sound was coming from the window. Moving my legs,I walked slowly, trying my best to be as quiet as I could. Carefully I peered outside, through the window. There was no one. Furrowing my eyebrows, I squinted my eyes to see in the dark. Then I saw it, white, pointy nose, croaked smile and ugly.

My eyes snapped open and in response to that could, the racing beats of my heart. Struggling to breathe,I looked around. I was in my room. Unable to move,I was scared out of mind. It was all a dream. "Nightmare you mean"

Thanks for reading. A little short note on this story. So it was about four to five years ago. I used to write on this page I created on Facebook. Had almost 11k followers then I just stopped. Was going through my Wattpad drafts and I saw this. I usually wrote my stuff there, for reasons unknown to me. Saw this draft and I was nostalgic. Decided to brush it up a bit and shoe you guys. Hope you enjoyed it.

Hello @omokhafue, Material published on Wattpad is considered published, and not eligible for publication in the Inkwell community. We only accept first-time, unpublished, original work.

Thank you for thinking of us!

@theinkwell Hear me out, please.
I said it was in my draft, meaning it was never published. Because of how filled up my note app is on my phone and the word limit, I usually go to Wattpad to write and store in my draft. I have no published stuff on Wattpad and I didn't post this on Facebook. It was a random story I wrote some years back that never left my draft. It's a first time, unpublished work.

Thank you for your response, @omokhafue. We have a few recommendations for you to help with future stories:

  • Write in full sentences, and add a space between every sentence. (Many of your sentences have no space between the period and the next sentence.)
  • Do a careful reading of the story before posting it to look for errors that should be fixed.
  • Don't end a story with it all being just a dream. See our article on this topic to learn more about this.

Good luck and keep writing.

Alright then... Thankyou
