I felt so excited to be in school, but at the same time, I made up my mind not to be a lousy person but to be calm and be a responsible student. Alone side, to choose my friend wisely.
Getting to school that day, we had my favorite subject, which is the English language. I like the subject because I'm excellent at it. My mother is also known to be an English tutor, as she used to engage me in some spellings, and most of the time, I read the textbook and extracted some difficult words to learn.
She has been my good mentor right from my primary school, she trained me up to have self timetable for reading. It was not easy but I have no choice than to submit to her instructions.
Mrs. Juwon stepped in and asked everyone to bring our notes for spelling. I felt so excited about the exercise, but I tried my best to comfort myself not to let everyone know I'm good at it.
We ended the exercise, the results came out, and my tutor was so amazed to see that I scored the highest, even though I seemed to be a new student. She praised me for my performance.
Everyone knows me to be a quiet and a clam girl in class but very good at English and some other subjects in class. I decided to form a group of friends in the class, whereby we learn new words every day. However, I try my best to hide my identity as a brilliant student in class.
Most often in time, my English tutor calls on me to spell out words, but I won't talk. I do mute myself when speaking out. She regularly tries her best to encourage me to be an extroverted student. She also said that been an introverted student would only kill the mural spirit. I felt that it didn't matter.
Somehow and some day, we had a spelling bee competition between the junior and senior. My friend chose me, but I declined to stand in public to speak. I selected my close friend to represent us for the junior arm. We both practiced spelling and got her ready for the competition.
However, the competition seems to come three times before the winner is announced. In the first round, we lost. I was so pained. I then made up my mind to replace her in the second round. At this time, the junior arm won, and everyone seemed to be surprised. But my English tutor knows I'm good at spelling.
The third round came up, and I won the junior arm competition. The whole school looked so astonished, wondering why I didn't show up at first. But within me, I knew it was a wake-up call to bring out the intelligence in me.
One day, my English tutor called me to her office and asked me to prepare for the next week. I'm going to be a speaker in a debate coming up. I responded, "Okay, ma.”
When I got home, I told my mother about it. I said, “Mum, I don't think I will be able to participate in it because I'm always frightened when I stand in public, and I plan to stay at home on the day of the competition.”.
My mother responded, “My dear, don't you know the zeal is in you? You're fully capable of doing it; this is how a lawyer starts. If you want to be a lawyer, you need to mingle and know how to speak in public. After all, you're our lawyer at home. You need to stand up to train yourself for the task. Or don't you want to become a lawyer in the future?”.
I responded, “I want to be.”.
“So cheer up; I'm going to help you.”.
My mother's words gave me the courage to give it a trial for the task. My mother helped me gather some information and train up for the task.
The day came when I was called out to support the motion that says a female child is capable of being a governor of a state.
I was shivering like a wet dog, but still, I tried my best to give out the necessary points. To my amusing surprise, I was called out as one of the amusing people who was able to defend the debate topic.
After that day, I was so bold to stand and speak in public. My debating tactics woke me from being enclosed within me. It was a call for change and a call for greatness.
