Each time I remember how I and my family--Mom, Dad, and two of my siblings--cheated death in a fatal car accident, I'm reminded that we're indeed a living testimony. I have always heard of different scenarios of how a family was completely wiped out, either in a car accident, a plane crash, or even a shipwreck. But this time I didn't just hear of it; I experienced it, and fortunately, by the grace of God, we all survived.
It's been over five years since the car accident took place, but it's still evergreen in my head. And the most surprising fact is that every single passenger that was in the car that day survived. It was a sunny Sunday morning, and as usual, we were all getting ready to go to church. It's Mom's nature to make sure she has made herself up beautifully before we even think of leaving the house. If she doesn't rub her brown powder, line her lips, and apply foundation to her face, just forget it; she's not following you anywhere, and that's the bitter medicine we all have to swallow at home.
Whenever we intend on going to church early, with Mom on our side, it's impossible for that to work out. This is something that happens every Sunday, and even Dad has no choice but to get used to it. After Mom was ready, we all hopped into the car, and we zoomed off. Dad usually drives us to church every Sunday, and thanks to Mom, he'll drive crazily but be careful so that we can get to church on time before we're considered extremely late. To be honest, I usually like it when Dad drives because, no matter how fast he speeds up, we know we're safe. After all, he's the head of the family and wouldn't want anything to happen to us. With Dad's crazy driving, we were able to reach church much sooner. We went in and took our seats.
After the church service was over, Dad decided we would be going on a family outing and sat out at one of the fast food restaurants. We were so excited, so we went to one of the fast food restaurants andto our heart's content. When we were about to go home, Mom got the car key from Dad and insisted she'd drive us home. Dad didn't object at all, nor did any of us. We got into the car, and Mom zoomed off.
She drove a bit slowly, which was making the whole driving experience boring, but no one was ready to speak up, not even Dad. Mom said it's been awhile since we went on a family outing, so it wouldn't be a bad idea to drive slowly using the main street instead of short cuts. But Mom, the main route is always a bit busy, and we might probably get stuck in traffic. " My sister complained, " but Mom wasn't ready to pay attention to anything she was saying, so she kept on going without considering what Sarah had said to her.
Deep down, I know if Mom hadn't driven slowly that day, then there's no way we could have escaped the car accident. Normally, when a car is going through the bridge, it's not supposed to go too fast because of the slope on the bridge. I just don't know how I could have possibly explained this to the driver that came behind us racing down the bridge like his life depended on it. No one saw the car coming in so fast, not even Mom or Dad. We didn't expect such a hit. The crazy driver drove at such an uncontrollable speed that I'm sure his break fell when he saw our car. Thanks to the speed, he accidentally hit our car from behind, and since Mom didn't notice, this made the car spin down the bridge out of control. Mom tried her best to control it, but she couldn't right its paths, and that's how the car went till it hit a pole and then finally stopped. While the crazy driver's car was speeding up after hitting our car, his car crashed into the bridge, and that was the end of it.
Mom and Dad quickly rushed out of the car because the airbag had pulled up and came to get us out of the car, and out of shock, my child fainted. The whole scenario was just like a weird movie scene, but indeed we were saved by God's miracle because, had Mom not driven the car slowly, we would have been all dead today.
We all know we've had different experiences with regard to accidents. Since accidents occur in different ways, we say it's inevitable. But a car accident, especially one you never see coming, can send you into a terrible brain disorder if you can't handle shocks. My sister was able to recover from the trauma. But I'm still surprised that no one had to experience a single scratch on our bodies.
