Had I known

Kojo was known for his mischief by all. Kojo was the only child of his parents and was always getting into trouble, whether in the neighborhood or in school.

One day, after he had left for school, his mother was going around tiding the house up when she saw him in the hall watching TV. "Kojo! What are you doing here in front of the TV whiles you are supposed to be in school?" Kojo turned to face her, showing a blood stained shirt with some blood on his forehead. "Were you involved in a fight? Is that why you've been sent home early?"

"I'm sorry mom", that's all Kojo said, his face looking so sorrowful.

"Go to your room. I don't want to even hear you speak. I can't deal with this now. When your father comes home, he will handle you". With that, Kojo climbed the stairs to his room, with his head bent down like he was being sent to his doom.

Just then, her phone rang and she answered. "I am Mr.Abeiku, calling from Kojo's school. Is this his mother?"

" Yes it is. I'm so sorry my son fought in school. I know he's been in a lot of fights but I promise this will be the last one. Please don't kick him out", she pleaded.

With a surprised voice he said, "Well madam, that's not why I called. Some of the kids went up to the rooftop during break time. Unfortunately, your son was one of them. He fell from the roof of the school and died instantly. I don't have all the details now but the police are here..." She didn't wait for him to finish before racing up the stairs with trembling legs to her son's room. It was empty.

Oh that's a really heartbreaking ending to the short story... Too bad, his mischievous self ended his life.

He knew how wrong he was and came to apologize to his mum before leaving, really sad.

It is heartbreaking. Thank you for reading.

I love how cleverly this came out. The way you arched it made me want to reach the end quickly. I think Kojo came to say goodbye to his mother.

I am not sure this fits in here though but I'll let the admin do their work.

Thanks for reading. I posted earlier in OCD and it was suggested to me that here will be a better fit for the post.

Thanks for posting in The Ink Well. We are looking for great stories to curate, with excellent characters, action, dialog and narrative. In our guidelines (see our manifesto), we suggest a bare minimum of 350 words, in order to develop a strong story. You'll find great tips for developing characters, conflict, story arcs and more in our catalog of fiction writing tips. Good luck and keep writing.

Thank you. Will do well to write more.
