Creative Nonfiction in The Ink Well Prompt #75

Source

Welcome to The Ink Well's weekly creative nonfiction prompt!

In this post, we'll announce the winners from last week's contest and provide the prompt for the coming week.

Before You Write Your Creative Nonfiction Post...

We ask that you read our Creative Nonfiction Tips post to learn about the creative nonfiction genre and review our guidelines.

Important notes:

  • Creative nonfiction stories are based on your real-life experiences.
  • We are looking for real short stories! Not advice columns, reports on crime or corruption in your city, observations on nature, recipes, religion, politics, or any other nonfiction content. Just real-life short stories.
  • Ideal story length is between 750 and 1500 words, but your story must be at least 350 words, at a minimum to be curated.
  • Please focus on quality content. Read and edit for errors! Use a grammar checker before you post your story.
  • We expect everyone who posts in The Ink Well to read and comment on at least two other stories for each one published.
  • Do not post stories featuring physical abuse, graphic violence, erotica or NSFW content.

Highlighting @wongi, with the story:

Lady On A Mission

I'm not a big fan of these rallies because they usually involve covering long distances on foot, being exposed to constant sunlight and it also involves stressful activities. Knowing myself, I am one of those people who stress doesn’t look good on, so I try to abstain as much as possible.

Curator's comment :

Wongi turns in an engaging CNF piece about a seemingly dull topic. She describes the distress she feels about having to participate in World Oral Health Day. Not only does she not enjoy the obligatory rally that goes along with this observation, but she also does not enjoy being recruited to get supplies for the event. Nonetheless, she rises to the challenge. Who cares, right? It is a tribute to her writing skills that we care as we read.

Highlighting @amarachi22, with the story:

THE THOUGHT OF WHAT IF

At this point, I was already shaking with fear. The office suddenly felt so hot, even though there were functional air conditioners. My palms and face were all sweaty. I couldn't think clearly. I was pacing around the room, restless. The turbulent rush of adrenaline which coursed through my veins did nothing to calm my already raging nerves.

Curator's comment :

Amarachi22 writes for the turbulent prompt. It's a fabulous #CNF about a day she spent covering her mom's mini-bank store while her Mom was away at a funeral. Well balanced, great dialogue, and nicely developed. I was glued to my screen throughout the read.

Highlighting @cajiro, with the story:

A shooting star

Just when she mentioned something about the cayenne trees and flowers in her longed-for garden, I told her that I had a book that talked about it and that I could lend it to her, which she accepted with much excitement. So we said goodbye and I went back to my house since there was no more time to visit my friends.

Curator's comment :

cajiro has us in his control as he writes his CNF piece. It is about love that never has the chance to be fully embraced. He meets a girl casually one day. They form a tentative connection, but little weight is placed on this encounter. As time passes they meet a few more times and their compatibility becomes evident. Cajiro is in love, he thinks, but he hesitates to define love. He goes to her house one day to lend her a book. She is not well and cannot take it. He returns many times, but does not see her again. Not until months pass does he encounter a man coming out of her house with suitcases. The man tells Cajiro that the young woman died, months before.

This Week's Prompt 75:

"Water off a duck's back"

The Free Dictionary describes the idiom thus : Fleetingly, without having any significant, lasting, or apparent impact on someone or something.

  • He seemed so unconcerned after he lost his job. I thought he'd be devastated, but it was like water off a duck's back!
  • I envied my friend for her nonchalant attitude; she took criticism as if it were water off a duck's tail!

Tell us about it! And remember to integrate storytelling elements like characters, scene setting, dialogue and action to bring your story to life!

Have fun and good luck! We look forward to reading your stories.
