Cardamom is one type of herbal plant in Indonesia. This plant consists of two types, namely local cardamom and sabrang cardamom. But in general farmers in Indonesia prefer to grow local species. Because local cardamom according to most farmers has advantages including:
- High growth power
- Rhizome reproduction is fast
- Keep growing even with less fertile land
- Fruits quickly, densely and quickly ripens, so it can be harvested every month
From these advantages, farmers prefer local cardamom to other types, although local cardamom also has disadvantages. Disadvantages of local cardamom include the long dry season, the plant will die quickly, the fruit is small and light.
The part of the cardamom plant that has economic value is the fruit. Cardamom fruit is located at the bottom of the stem, the fruit is round in small pink color while after ripening it turns dark red in color. Cardamom fruit is used as an herbal medicine because it is believed to function to lower blood pressure, improve respiratory flow, overcome digestive problems, reduce bad breath and so on.
