How to Keep Christ at the Center of Christmas

Merry Christmas!

My celebration for this season wouldn't have been complete without sharing with the Hive family. I hope these words would soothe your heart.

"Christmas is one of the most celebrated seasons in the world, yet its true essence which is centered on the birth of Jesus Christ, is often overshadowed by commercialism, social events, and endless to-do lists. For Christians, keeping Christ at the center of Christmas is not just a tradition; it is a commitment to honour God and reflect on the message of salvation.". These were the words that my heart grasped while sitting at the pew during the Christmas service.

While the relevance of the season of Christmas is unending, keeping Christ Jesus as the center and focus of our celebration would demand that we do the following.

**Show gratitude in worship and prayer.
While you get excited about the ecstasy of the moment, dedicate each moment to God in prayer. Pray as a family, giving thanks for the gift of Jesus and inviting Him to guide your celebrations. Attend worship services or a Christmas vigil to also set the tone, reminding you of the reason for the season.

Reflect on the History of Christ's birth

Make time to read and reflect on the biblical account of Christ’s birth (Luke 2:1–20, Matthew 1:18–25). Gather with family or friends to discuss what the story means to you. Consider acting out the nativity story with children. This will help them visualize and connect with the events that changed the world.

Set Up a Christ-Centered Decoration

While Christmas trees, lights, and ornaments are beautiful, include decorations that reflect the birth of Jesus. Display a history-centric scene prominently in your home, hang Bible verses on the Christmas tree, or use an Advent wreath to count down the days with scripture and prayer.

Give Intentionally

The essence of Christmas is God’s generosity in giving His Son to the world (John 3:16). Reflect this in your own life by giving intentionally. Donate to a charity, support a family in need, or gift meaningful items that reflect the love of Christ. Teaching children to give, not just receive, instills the heart of Christmas in the next generation.

*Sing Christ-Centered Carols"

Music has a way of drawing our hearts closer to God. Sing or listen to carols that emphasize the birth and glory of Christ, such as "O Holy Night," "Silent Night," or "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing." These hymns remind us of the profound spiritual meaning of Christmas.

Simplify the Celebration

It is easy to get caught up in the rush of parties, shopping, and decorations. Simplify your Christmas to reduce stress and create more space for Christ-centered activities. Focus on meaningful traditions rather than excess.

Share the Gospel

Use Christmas as an opportunity to share the gospel message. Send cards with scripture or write letters that point loved ones to Christ. Host a small gathering where the focus is on reflecting God’s love through testimonies, worship, and fellowship.

Celebrate Communion

If your church offers a Christmas Eve or Day communion service, attend as a family. It is a powerful reminder of how the birth of Christ connects to His sacrificial death and resurrection. If unable to attend, consider a small family communion time at home.

Teach Children About Christ

Help children understand that Christmas is not just about gifts and Santa Claus. Use storybooks, animated videos, or creative crafts to teach them about Jesus’ birth. Involve them in traditions like baking a “Happy Birthday, Jesus” cake to celebrate His birth.

Focus on Gratitude

Reflect on the blessings of the year and the hope that Christ brings. Keep a gratitude journal, write thank-you notes, or simply gather as a family to express your thanks to God for His love and faithfulness.

Keeping Christ at the center of Christmas requires intentionality, but the rewards are immeasurable. By focusing on Him, you experience a deeper joy, peace, and purpose that transcends the season's distractions. Let this Christmas be a celebration of Christ’s love, His light in our lives, and His promise of eternal hope. After all, He is the greatest gift ever given.
