The political landscape is heating up, and it would appear that Joe Biden can't seem to catch a break. I've been keeping up with the news lately. It's getting wild in this Democratic camp business. It's like watching a family feud play out on national TV.
Now Joe Manchin, that perennial loose cannon, is calling on Biden to step down from the 2024 race. Pretty bold coming from a guy who just jumped ship from the Democratic Party. You know what? He may be right. Biden isn't exactly setting the world on fire with his campaign.
I have seen the polls, and they are not very appealing to Biden. He trails Trump in some of the key swing states, which has to keep his team up all night. I think panic is setting in with the Democrats, and who can blame them? They're watching their chances of keeping the White House slip away.
Now, we've got someone like Jared Polis, Colorado's governor, saying things should be done the other way. He doesn't say straight out that Biden should just step away, but I can read between the lines. I really do believe this is just the tip of the iceberg. Other Democrats need to be thinking along these lines but are too afraid to say so out loud.
The debacle of the debate performance seems not to depart from Biden. I remember watching and having a sense of "Yikes, this is not good." That's almost a month ago, and he's still rebuilding voter confidence. That is a long time in politics, and I'm just not sure he has all that much more time available to turn things around.
I got to hand it to Bill and Hillary Clinton, though; they're out there pounding the pavement pretty well to get the troops in line and the donors on board. My feeling is that they're fighting a losing battle. You know you're in trouble when those high-dollar ticket donors start threatening to close their wallets.
This whole Trump assassination attempt thing has just thrown another sort of monkey wrench into the mix.
I hate to say it, but I believe this might have given Trump a boost from where he previously was in the polls. Politics can sometimes be such a weird game, I feel like this might implicitly work in Trump's favor, though definitely not what anyone would want or expect to happen.
I'm curious to see how all this pans out. The Democrats are in a tight position. If they go the route of sticking with Biden, it could mean losing the election to Trump. If they try to bail now and run a different candidate, that's going to get pretty messy, too. I think they're damned if they do and damned if they don't.
