I Preferred Paper

Hi fellow Hiveians,

Today I wanted to appreciate taking a step back, and using a regular old book!

I Preferred Paper

Would you like to do a bit of traveling, but in an oldschool way? I did!

We recently did some traveling for some stuff, and it was largely a really good experience. We got to visit somewhere we had never been to before, see and meet all kinds of wonderful people and expose ourselves to new things. Overall that's what you want when you are traveling, especially when it's not thousands of miles away!

When we were getting ready and organizing the things for the traveling though, I was considering some of the things I wanted to bring. I ended up making a really good decision - bring some actual books instead of doing things on my phone or laptop!

I've been digging into a lot of health and science topics lately, as is per usual for me, but one of the really important and fascinating topics I've dove into is the really important relationship our bodies, brains and organs have to the light around us. Short summary: it's REALLY unhealthy for us!

That's not to say that we should go back and be Luddites and get rid of it all in favor of life 200 years ago. That's not good either, but we have to figure out a way to manage ourselves and our surroundings so that it's not damaging to us as much as we can, within reason.

One of the things I've been making conscious decisions to do is figure out ways to spend less time on my phone or computer and more time looking at other things and the people around me. This meant that for the plane travel and sitting around in the airport, I was using a physical book instead of a phone!

Most of the people are glued to their phones, from young children all the way up to people in their 80's and 90's. I get it, they are incredibly addicted. We don't have to be though, and the first way to get over an addiction is to recognize it is an addiction and take steps to move away from it.

I haven't flown on a plane in several years, and the last time I flew I didn't bring a book, but I also didn't really have anything that I needed to read. This time, I had plenty of things I wanted to read, and with the layovers that happen with all flights these days, I had plenty of opportunity to hang out and read! I certainly spent time with my wife and son when I could, but a lot of it was trying to finish the books I had brought!

This also meant that I was a little more aware of the people around me. Sadly the vast majority of people in the planes and airports had absolutely no clue or self awareness. They were glued completely to their devices and didn't see anything happening around them. That's definitely an unfortunate reality that I saw.. and one that I hope to change one small step at a time! The important thing for me in that regard is that my son saw me reading a book instead of nose glued to the phone. I may not be the best father in the world, but I have many things that I am really adamant about trying to instill in him - and being present in the situation is definitely one of them.

I can not remember the last time I read a book. I think it was 15-20 years back. The dark tower stephen king series. They did a great job bringing that to the movie screen in my opinion also

I guess if you count repair manuals and parts catalogs I have read some in the last few years.

I never was into reading much. I dod like the Conan the Barbarian graphic novels. Also good movies later on.

Haha yeah I hear you man. I love to read, but I just don't have the time to do it. Maybe when I'm in my 60's I'll get back into reading! The book I read was a health book and it was a fascinating one at that, so I really enjoyed it. I could have listened to it or something, but I needed my wits about me in the cluster fuck that is an airport.

Graphic novels were fun, I read a few of them but I was more into the fantasy science fiction stuff. Dean Koontz wrote a really cool rendition of Frankenstein a decade ago or so, and I loved it!

Hmm, "unfortunately", it's phones and tech for me. I just feel that there's so much updated information I can get from my phone, especially social media, the latest news, the latest trends, etc. Where the nature of books is that the information is outdated because it's at the time of writing/publishing, especially for non fiction. But I do need to cut down on my screen time and get some fresh air and that's work in progress. Hehe.

Well yes and no. With this non-fiction book it was health related and yes you might be able to get the information contained in the book in peer reviewed articles and stuff but the content was well researched and specific. It was basically taking someone's life work and digesting it into a book. They go all over the place and sure, it could be 15 peer reviewed things but I don't really want to read that when I can read this guys experience with it, how he uses it and what it does to benefit his patients and people around him. It was an easier way to spend a few hours in an airport.

When I'm at home, I do prefer the papers because I have more time to pay attention and I don't need my self awareness to be as incredibly high and on-edge as it is in an airport.

So I agree but disagree with you there :D

I see where you are coming from too. Always interesting to hear different perspectives, that's perfectly ok! :)

Self awareness! This is what I sometimes argue with the people around me, they lack so much of it and it shows in their behaviour. I don't for what reasons actually, but it kinds of pisses me off when they're not aware of their immediate surrounding, glued to their devices that eat away at their precious time without giving anything of value in return.

Yeah I see people all the time walking into poles and tripping and shit. They have no peripheral senses because of the damn phone. It's not good! I'm glad that you are more aware of it than most people, as it's a really dismal outlook when we have so little people who care.

It could probably get worse in the future when VR becomes mainstream, becoming less aware of our immediate surroundings, immersing ourselves in fantasy land.

It's pretty rare that I read, but when I do I don't mind doing it on my phone. My wife usually has three books going at one time. One on her Kindle, one as an audio book, and one real book.

That's a lotta books! I don't have the time for that anymore lol. I only really read when I'm somewhere like a plane or airport otherwise I'm diving into a podcast or something. I needed more wits about me though, so I didn't do anything audio related.

Yeah, she is pretty impressive. I think she read something like 60 books last year alone. My sister on the other hand is off the planet. She read close to 200 books last year.

Oh man that’s a lot of free time hahaha. I know there’s lots to read but that’s wild!
