Sketching is a relatively new creative outlet for me. I have always been more of the 'you draw it, I'll color it' type.
But lately I have been spreading my creative wings and branching out ...umm, mixed metaphors?...to learn the basics or sketching.
This week I have been taking a 'Perspective for Sketchers' class through Craftsy.
And for me, the ability to PAUSE (or even stop to let the dogs out or answer a text or whatever) and start again are KEY for me to have any real progress with something I really struggle with.
There are tons of free classes on the site, though this one is 'locked' after the intro, unless you are a member. They have so many different classes but this one popped up in my email at PRECISELY the time I was starting to get deeper into more technical sketching!
THE SKETCH!
Starting with a straight on elevation view, we do a door. 'Homework': find your own door or window. I've not yet ventured out to do that as my plate is overflowing at present (so many excuses not to grow! ugh). But I did follow along with her, taking in the tips and process.
We then moved onto a more intense building to get the 'basic shapes' to start the sketch.
I actually REALLY LOVE the look of loose pencil sketches with a thin watercolor overlay. When I sketch and then go in with ink, I feel as if I've ruined the organic flow of it.
But since watercolor painting is also a new love of mine (I actually have some classes I am taking today!) I am letting loose and being loose!
Artistically, speaking.
I'm still using my very favorite mechanical pencil with the .7mm lead.
Taking notes and learning.
I am eager to get to the coloring in part but I am just 5 modules into the 8 module lesson (each module is only about 20 minutes, average...plus all my pausing and re-starting, that is.)
So I'm having fun with my mechanical pencil and cheap 75# sketchbook. Today is all about color though, so we'll see what happens next!
