Every week I paint a miniature painting and post a little tutorial blog about it . But this week I'm drawing a miniature painting with oil pastels .
I had these oil pastels in my unused stationary stash sitting just in my cupboard at the back and as I cleaned up everything I saw them and was like I need to used them so here we are.
For the canvas I'm using a cartridge sheet in 4×6 inch ratio . I taped the edges with masking tape and here we start making it all up again .
So oil pastels are a tricky medium since they are very waxy . Pros are they don't leak you can do it on any kind of paper . Cons are blending these will literally give you ache in fingers and also the colors can mess up like if u blend a gradient with yellow and blue it will turn a little green .
Now I start by marking a horizon and above it I make clouds like rounded wavy clouds and I color it up with a sky blue pastel and just give a few hints of pale blue on the cloud even now for blending them I took a Blending stump and some Vaseline . Yes any mild colorless oil would work even but just a Little tip dipped in Vaseline can do wonders .also pastels turn more dark as u used an oil material to blend them so here I start blending the inner cloud first then the sky and I also added some gray under the clouds to make them pop a little more .
Now for the bottom Horizon I will layer up colors to give that grass effect . We start by doing a yellow layer do it fast leaving spaces doing fill it fully and then we add lighter green and try to fill more of the empty spaces and on top we add a dark green pastel and color it up now we blend it all up again.
We take a dark green pastel and start making pointy needle like lines so these will be our leaves in a tulip field I added some dark brown lines too and scratched some needles ( That's another tip with oil pastels you can make negative spaces by scratching the pastel over and revealing the paper under or an layer under .
After this I added some blobs of yellow pastel dots and some pink dots so these are gonna be out tulips in the fields I keep scratching and adding more and then I removed the masking tape off the edges .
Here is the finished result . I personally love drawing with crayons and oil pastels yet I feel they are a very tricky medium to work with but that is what makes them really unique too .
That's all for today Thank you for your precious time and support ❤️
