Everyone knows the habit of cats scraping trees and furniture with their claws. This is when their claws are sharpened, but they may just be stressful.
This cat I painted lives on freely and scratches a plank. Its hair shines in the sunlight, in contrast with the dark background.
This is my first attempt at monochrome painting, choosing Payne grey. Payne gray has recently become one of my favorite colors. I have this kind of manufactured paint (Van Gogh), but it can be easily made by mixing sepia and ultramarine blue.
I covered the cat's whiskers with a masking fluid, it is denser than what I used before. I had to squeeze out of a beaked tube like a glass contourer, so the line was broken in some places. That's why, this material did not become my favorite. The pattern of the cat’s fur was the other challenge, I had to simplify that. If I painted its hair in strands, I would still do it.
I already want to switch from the natural style to the loose, light style. In this, old Japanese artists are my role models who created worlds with a few brushstrokes. Unfortunately, I'm still far from that!
In the meantime, I’m happy with this cat because I’ve taken a step forward again. Fortune favors the brave! I'll start painting a portrait one day, but until then, the animals will stay. I want to paint the same in sepia.
