Hello and happy Friday!
About six months ago, I started this project. Creating a tarot deck based on my favourite show should be easy and fun right? Apparently not! Despite my enthusiasm, I quickly realized that my drawing skills just weren't up to the task.
These test covers showed me just how much I still had to learn. Lately, I have been feeling a little bit more confident. So, before I start again, I thought it would be interesting to see Version 1 of my first three box cover options. At the very least it'll serve as a good indicator of improvement!
This is the final card border design I settled on. The process for getting to it follows:
Some good ol' zombie hands! Fun stuff.
A ton of colouring later...
...then I scrapped that idea and decided to start over, adding the headings at the top and bottom.
I also created an option with a coloured (gray as a placeholder) background option, but I didn't like it that much after more testing.
Option 1
For the covers, I chose to use iconic scenes/images. I might go in a completely different direction for the final version. Only time will tell.
The first concept was heavily inspired by pop art, which I might still consider.
I opted for semi traditional pop arty colours too, not quite sure if that is the direction I want to go in...might do a very green deck!
All in all, I quite like the idea, but my drawing skills still left much to be desired!
Option 2
I think this one is my favourite!
I opted for a vaguely pointillism/graphic novel inspired hybrid type of style for this one.
Out of all the faces on this cover, this one turned out the best...even though I'm still not super into the character.
I tried a slightly different version of the same style for the next one, but didn't like it as much, which is a pity, always sucks when your favourite character is the one you mess up.
Option 3
I have absolutely no idea where the rest of the photos for this one disappeared to, but I really don't like this one. The sort of rough and messy hatching style really just looks half-assed to me.
Now, seeing as we are all updated, I think I will be returning to this project. I am even considering getting one or two people in on it. Assigning characters and scenes to cards will be much easier and more fun with some help!
Well, that's it, hope it was entertaining!
Till next time!
