Hi Everyone.
I sculpted some gargoyle miniatures in the past. They were stylized, fantasy version of gargoyles. This time I want them to be more realistic. I am basing these on actual gargoyle statues that can be found on Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris.
One of my favorite elements of the Notre-Dame were always creatures inhabiting the upper floors of the cathedral. Each of them strange and unique. Some resemble real animals like birds, reptiles or even elephants. Others took the shapes of fairy-tale dragons or winged demons. The appearance of some of them may be quite disturbing, but large part of them look quite harmless and funny. Each gargoyle seems to have its own story to tell. After all, their stone eyes must have seen quite a bit of history.
They saw, for example, the looting carried out by mobs during the French Revolution as well as the recent fire that consumed a large part of the church's roof. The cathedral certainly hasn't had an easy life, but I'm very glad it's still with us.
I'm in constant awe when I look at it. Every small detail, in even the most inaccessible parts of this cathedral, suspended high away from human sight, was treated with highest attention and care. I have always appreciated this part of old architecture and I greatly miss it in today's sterile looking buildings.
These 3D models are an introduction to a sculpture I am working on and plan to finish in the near future. I wonder if you could guess what it is :)
