With every thing happening in the world recently it's been difficult to justify making light-hearted posts. However in a crisis where the average person can't have any influence on events, I think it's important to be aware of what's happening, but not get carried away and focus only on the bad.
With that said, in an attempt to stop myself doom scrolling I'm going to write about the time me and @bombaycrypto went axe throwing!
We went to a place called Boom Battle Bar a chain with several locations across the UK. They offer activities such as pool, beer pong, augmented darts (the board totals up the score for you), crazy golf, shuffleboard, table football, etc. But the real selling point as you've guessed from the title is axe throwing.
@bombaycrypto turns out to be a dead eye killer with an axe
An axe throwing lane can be rented for 45 minutes for up to 10 people, however I'd advise having a max of 5 or 6 so that everyone gets enough turns. We were a group of 5 and it seemed to be the ideal trade between "I want another go" and "My arm hurts I want to go home".
If you're competitive there isn't an official way of scoring, but someone using notes on their phone can keep track. We did this for a few rounds before I lost track trying to take pictures of the group. Not just because bombaycrypto started nailing the bullseye every time, honest.
Suspiciously accurate
The session started by signing waivers confirming you're physically fit enough to take part, and that you haven't consumed any alcohol. (Axe throwing is the only activity that they won't serve attendees alcohol to). Once the boring legal stuff is out of the way an instructor describes then demonstrates the correct technique and the session begins!
Finally a sport I'm alright at. Axe throwing in the Olympics when?
The technique was different to what you would naturally try without coaching. You step forward with the foot opposite from the hand holding the axe, so for someone right handed you step forward with your left foot while throwing. This feels unnatural as it throws you off balance a little but it resulted in the axes embedding in the wood with a loud thud a lot more often than the guys that forgot and stepped forward on their right foot.
Correct technique but hilarious outcome
After the axe throwing we went for dinner and a few pints before returning to play some table football. Once again it was a 45 minute slot booked online.
Boom Battle Bar is ideal for people that like to plan out their day, but a nightmare for spontaneous activity. I'd 100% recommend booking a few activities several days in advance as they do get fully booked on weekends (45 minutes goes by very quickly when you're having fun). It's definitely not the sort of place where you just turn up and hope for a free slot.
Now if you'll excuse me I have to resist the urge to buy axes from a hardware store and build a throwing lane in my garage out of old pallets.
