Rice is the basic food in the Philippines. Unlike any other country, Filipinos can't be full without eating rice. This is the basic food and pair it with another food like what we called a viand food, for example, fish or meat. So rice is a very important food for Filipinos during their meals. But it's okay, rice fields in the Philippines are wider and manier like mountains.
According to the farmers, there is rice that can be harvested after 100 days. Obviously, some rice can be harvested in less than 100 days. After days or months of waiting they are now harvesting the rice. Now, what I'm going to show you are the processes of harvesting the rice and then it's ready to mill. It needs to mill because the rice that will be harvested contains husks. It needs to be removed so that the rice can now be cooked by boiling it.
So the first process when harvesting the rice is reaping. It is being reaped because only the fruit of the rice crops with a short part of the crops below is cut. That way it will be easier to separate the grains from the reaped fruit of the crops. Most farmers use sickles because they are very sharp and curved so they will be easier to use.
See the images above for how it's done.
After reaping or cutting the matured rice they will begin the threshing. This should be done to separate the grain from its straw. Ages ago when technology didn't exist, they smash the rice straw together with the rice; This way, the rice will separate from the straw because it falls by smashing it. Although it requires a lot of processes to separate the grain of the rice from the straw. Unfortunately, I don't have an image to show you how it's done because no one is using this process for now.
As of now, they are now using a thresher in separating the rice. You can see in the image above how it's done. I will be showing you the steps in threshing it.
Place the whole reaped rice crop. Let the machine separate the grain rice.
The straw is being removed.
The grain of rice is now being separated.
After separating the grains, it's not ready to mill it yet. You need to place it under the sun to make sure it's already dry. For a whole sunny day, you need place the grain of rice for two days. After that, it is now ready to mill the rice so it can now be boiled. I hope you understand the process and it helps you to learn.
