It's funny how different cultures across space and time have different views and tolerances as to what constitutes reasonable risk. I chuckle when I see kids in another country jumping off of barges or other types of structures we would consider too risky for children AND adults. Our western cultures have changed too across the years, and I think we've become too risk averse.

OMG!

I think of my childhood. My mother would open the back door and we'd take off for the hills. She had not idea what we did up there--swamp trolling, swinging from vines. We'd come back at the end of the day in one piece :)

We are over protective, but when you are a parent it's hard to accept danger for your children (for me anyway).
