Units increase when you are sponsored by or sponsor others.

rshares balance (pending upvote value) increases every 2.4 hours based on how many units you have. When it is high enough for us to deliver our minimum upvote, it will decrease by the upvote size we delivered and then resume ticking up every 2.4 hours.
