Afroman is a one hit wonder from the early 2000s. Because I Got High was a Grammy nominated hit that has an incredibly addictive tune.
Because I Git High came out in 2000, before 9/11. This was a carefree time for me, and during the Summer this jam was all over the radio. At this time the Ska, reggae and pop punk revolution was on, and somehow this song slipped into the mix. It was interesting to see how the alternative and pop stations played this 24/7 and how we listened. I bought this single in 2000, some 23-years ago.
Afroman made this song as a positive spin to his relationship with substances. The song basically shows how if you're not careful, your substance use can get you stuck in life. In the lyrics, Afroman loses out on financial, romantic and career aspirations because he was high at the time and unable to focus. It's a lesson to not take things too far and use moderation when the important responsibilities of life denand attention.
This song is catchy and essentially takes me back to better days. This time in history, almost a quarter century ago, was before the big changes that came about after 9/11. I was almost in college and the world seemed so bright.
This song has fun lyrics and a relaxed beat. They would play it on the pop stations and the alternative radio stations as well, making it an effective crossover.
Afroman has a great stage show. I was fortunate enough to see him live in concert a few years ago, and you know this song was at the forefront of the show. Give it a listen and prepare to relax and learn.
