It's a volcano and there are some ferries that can take you there in the morning (slow as hell) and then get you back in the afternoon. You can't stay overnight I believe.
The landscape is almost 100% basalt and vegetation. But the paths are nicely done and easy to go through. There are also some very known, "lava caves" where one goes through a few meters long subterranean tunnel the lava created. This is the same island where on the "New Year" gets a light pointing into the sky and you can see it from Auckland shore.
Oh, that sounds so cool. Have to add it to our loooooong list, @new.things.
