Getting Comfortable Feeling Uncomfortable

Been strapped for time lately, and haven’t managed to get any longer distance runs in that I promised myself.

I got a 5km run in earlier in the week at a cruisy pace, so tonight I opted for an anaerobic workout with the focus of getting more comfortable with being uncomfortable.

Goal was to smash out 2kms in under 8min. Fair to say I got there by the slimmest of margins.

This is the long-term goal I want to get my 5km pace to, in which my plan of attack is to alternate between shorter anaerobic runs, and longer slower runs to build a better aerobic base fitness.

Finished it off with a light cool-down jog home, after I managed to recapture my breath first.

I’m pretty new to running, any advice on improving my 5km time, and the way you would structure your training? Would you use a mixture of anaerobic and aerobic runs? Train different distances?

For now I think I’ll aim for 4min/km pace for 2.5km next, with longer runs in between.. and so on until I reach my goal.. Or I realise I’m dreaming 🤣

Nice work buddy :) I'll let @new.things chime in with running advice. I'm sure I could offer a few things but let's see what Brad says with all his decades of experience.

For me consistency is the key, build a base for a number of weeks then add small increases of either speed or distance. I don't think there is any perfect plan as there are so many variables in everybody lives, it just a matter of finding what works for you and when you can fit it in.
I am not a trained professional and hold no qualifications but am happy chat some more next time I see you.
