Wrist Pain Sorted From Push-Up Bars

The other day I posted about getting back in to a routine of push-ups and sit-ups but the push-ups were struggling due to constant pain in the wrist.

This could have been down to bad form, perhaps combining with tennis or just getting old and physically fragile lol!

Speaking of physically fragile - side note from today, I slipped over on the tennis court earlier and landed heavily on my hip and had to retire the match - I'm going to have to walk around in bubble wrap soon!

Anyway, back to the push-ups.

As you can see from the image above (not of me), the wrist is bent at a horrendous angle and over time, if you're not doing push-ups right, you'll find out about it as I have!

Over Xmas, I ordered some push-up bars as I watched a video on how to overcome the wrist pain from push-ups, having tried changing the position of my arms, doing wrist exercises (get those dirty thoughts out your head right now 😆) and spreading the fingers out as wide as possible on the ground.

These weren't working so I tried doing push ups on my knuckles, which relieved the pain in my wrist but have you ever done push-ups on your knuckles? It really hurts your knuckles instead!

So came to the conclusion that push up bars would do the trick as the wrist position would be in a more neutral one.

Well, they arrived today and I have to say - WOW! What a difference this has made. Absolutely no wrist pain whatsoever now.

Granted, I only did a short session as I've lost a little bit of strength the last couple of weeks but these bad boys have sorted it right out!

I can't wait to use them more.

They are basically in the same shape as an iron with an elevated, slightly angular handle. Position them where you want to and go for it.

If anyone has suffered with wrist pain doing push-ups, get some push-up bars!

Here's a tune to help get you started in the work out!

Good to hear your wrist pain is gone! Curious how you experience them on a long run instead of a short try. Don't know how intense your push-up sessions normally are? Think you'll start using muscles a lot different? so be prepared for muscular pain😅

Haha, I'll keep you posted. As long as the pain is muscular from strength training and not wrist ligament pain then I'll take that!

I was doing about 160+ push ups in a session (spread across 5 sets) but with the bars, I could barely get to 50! Definitely using different muscles, upper arms, shoulder even upper back are being used (I didn't know that some of these muscles existed 😂) - feeling it a lot today!

160!!!😎 how much rest in between the sets?

How are you picking up things above your head today? 😈

It depended on the session that I was doing with the app I use but either 60 seconds or 90 seconds in between the sets. My aim is to get to 100 push ups in a row without stopping and I managed to get to 60 before the wrist pain started. Now I'm aiming to get to 100 by the end of the year with these push-up bars which feels like it's going to be torture 😂

Hahaha! I'm taking the approach of "if it doesn't need picking up, forget it" today 😃

How is the picking up rule working out, are the muscles feeling better?

Haha, they are and I might give the push-ups another try... tomorrow 😃

I was going to recommend knuckle push-ups, dumbbell push-ups, or stiffer wrist wraps but sounds like you’ve figured out what works well for you 🤝

Thank you! Yeah I tried the knuckle push ups but don't think I'd have been able to do those for too long. The bars seem to be a worthwhile investment if the early days are anything to go by!

Very disappointed you didn't put a photo of yourself doing push ups 😂.

Don't usually get wrist pain from push ups, but have gotten wrist pain from lifting weights in the past. Does it occur instantly or after a certain amount of push ups?

Hahaha! I couldn't possibly put a picture up of me doing push-ups, it would break the Hive blockchain 😜

The pain used to come towards the end of the session, then it got towards the middle of the session and at the worst point before I ordered the bars, it was basically straight away. So had to do something about it. The pain is on the back of the hand, you can probably see the finger tendons if you bend your wrist up.

Where were you getting your wrist pain from lifting weights?

Getting it straight away sucks. I used to have it with heavier sets and bench press.
But that was when I was in good shape and was pushing myself, nowadays basically every part of my body would hurt ever a couple of push ups 😂.

I still feel we need a push up photo though... maybe something for a challenge 🤣

Haha, we're getting old mate, exercise is bad for us!

Aha, maybe when I go for the 100 push-ups in a row which is my target, I'll film it, we'll see! Lifting my arms right now after a session on the bars on Sunday is still proving difficult 😃
