Shoutout to all those who can study at night, burn midnight candles and all because it can never be me. I tried it not once, not twice but probably all my years of being a student and not even once did it work. The moment I cannot see sunlight, my brain decides for me that “hey, enough is enough! Let me rest”.
The first time I tried studying at night, I did some mediocre studies in the first hour and then for the next two hours, I found myself smiling at my wall. In my head, I was walking to the altar to meet my future husband and it was really a beautiful sight to behold. The second time, I ended up sleeping in the morning and then woke up around 4pm like a zombie with a terrible headache.
The third time I tried studying at dawn? Hmm, I ended up waking up my roommate to ask her if she could also see batman in the room. Knowing this about me and how I have a photographic memory as @hopestylist would say, I make sure to make hay whiles the sun shines (literally) because I have just until sunset to optimize my brain whether as a student or worker.
The number one thing I do anytime I have to study is to make sure I have a very well drawn out time table for whatever I have to study. From reading, to solving questions to taking breaks to engaging in conversations. I remember how one of my study time tables even had “check up on baby”. For how it got there, that’s a story for another day.
The second thing to do is to pick the location. During my first degree, my study location was the library for the obvious reasons. Let me skip to the important part. I always make sure to eat well and stay hydrated before attempting to study in the first place because hunger has no business with a focused mind. I mean you could try studying with hunger but trust me, you might either fail, faint or get frustrated. Whichever way, there will be an “f”.
Most people don’t pay attention to their bodies and brains when they are studying. I learned this the hard way but if you ever feel tired or feel like your brain is full, just rest. Sleep, take a walk, play games, call babe. If you don’t have babe, laugh about your bad character that is not making you have babe. Do what you have to do to get the stress off you.
Before I leave, let me share this gem to anyone who might need it. As a student, the best thing you could do to yourself and your brain is to study as you go. Don’t wait till the last minute before you try studying about 7 courses in 2 weeks. You’re not Rambo. Even if it’s one page per day make sure you do that from the first day of class and trust me, you’ll be happy.
