The beauty of life lies in changes that occurs with times and seasons with these changes having having their peculiarities and lifestyle adjustment accompanied with it by we humans. Here at my end, we are now in harmattan (dry season) with its perculiarities such as increase in temperature, scotching sunshine, hazy atmosphere, hot weather condition, cold night breeze and some other things. This is a time where we as humans need to adjust in our clothing, feeding and in some daily activities.
As a professional healtcare provider (a Pharmacist), there are some disease conditions prevalent in times like these and many patient have consulted alongside this reality at my workplace. Such disease/condition includes having heat rashes, developing allergic reactions, having coughs/catarrh and others. Based on my experience, my coping strategies are the proven tips i give to others aswell. First on the list is the need to stay well hydrated. Dehydration is the order of the day now because of the heat/hot weather condition of the harmattan season and we tend to drink alot of water as the body requires such, therefore we must avoid dehydration which can be deadly or induce unwellness in the body.
In addition, there is need to put on appropriate clothing material as suitable in this season. Thick and heat retaining clothing material e.g. black coloured fabrics might not be ideal during the day. At night when there will be cool weather, thick fabric material can be put on. Also, there is need to exercise caution with smokes, dusts and things that can be inhaled because of the hazy atmosphere which can be trigger to air-borne allergic conditions or diseases as the case maybe. For example, developing rhinitic conditions or frequent chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases are not far-fetched in this season. Use of face-masks and avoiding these mentioned triggers is counselled.
One useful tip in this season is carefulness in what is been taken as meal (food) especially as regards the quality, quantity, preparation, serving etc. Warm food are counselled especially for breakfast and probably dinner which should be well cooked, kept and served as we caution need to be excerised to properly cover foods because of flies, insects which may want to feed on them. It is advisable to take balanced diet which is a meal that contains the six (6) classes of food together with sufficient water (fluid intake). Lastly, we must **endeavor to stay in a place with good aeration **freed from smoke or dust especially fresh air as this is highly needed by the body. Suffocation must be avoided by all means in this season and unhealthy practices like generator exhausts pointing to the room should be avoided.
I believe these tips will be of help. Thank you for reading, comments and contributions are highly welcomed.
