Ghana is celebrating its independence day in 1957, freeing itself from its colonial master. As we celebrate this significant milestone, it's worth looking at what the country has achieved so far and where we need to improve to create a better future for our nation. In Ghana, 67 years of age marks retirement, and at this point, one should look beyond dependence. It is the time when your hard-earned savings should sustain you till you depart from this earth.
As we celebrate our independence day today, the first thing that comes to mind is our politicians. The best thing in the world is freedom. One can appreciate this by visiting a prison and promising an inmate that you will fight for their freedom. Until one loses their freedom, they will not understand how precious it is. I pause here to commend the effort put in by our great fathers who fought for our freedom against all odds.
The problem we face in our country is our politicians. They view ordinary citizens as hens or chicks that are hungry for maize. The owner traps these birds using maize. Similarly, politicians use promises of money to lure citizens during elections. Once they get into power, they forget about their promises and only care about themselves and their families.
I wish I could speak to every Ghanaian out there and tell them that these promises and money are just traps that slowly kill us. As the youth, we are the hope and future of our country, but it seems like there is no hope.
You look at our achievements as a country and it is sad because you can't point to any. Agriculture which is supposed to be the backbone of this nation is in shuttle.
Now we are losing our position as the largest producers of cocoa all in the name of illegal mining.
We are still battling with Energy. Our educational system has been affected. Nothing seems to be right. So what is this freedom we are celebrating today?
What I know is we celebrate achievement, not mere reflections.
We are all involved when we call for change, but if our leaders are not ready to effect these changes, the citizens will also be adamant.
