Christmas is just around the corner, and in about 20 days, the festive season will be upon us. However, I’m currently in school, and i am bothered that we won’t be allowed to leave the school premises until five days before Christmas. That leaves me with very little time to prepare and enjoy the holiday vibe as much as I would like. Still, Christmas has always been a special time for me, and despite this challenge, I’m really looking forward to it.
Growing up, I spent most of the before Christmas periods in school, so the holidays have always been a time I look forward for. To me, Christmas means more than just a festive season; it’s a time of rest and relief from all the stress that school brings. I always feel like a huge weight is lifted off my shoulders during this period. It’s a time to relax, unwind, and just enjoy the moment with my family.
One thing I’ve always loved about Christmas is the food. Back home, I have two sisters, and during Christmas, my mum would send them to the market to buy chicken. That chicken would be our main meal for the day and would last us throughout the holidays. Of course, I eat chicken at school sometimes, but there’s a massive difference between the meals I prepare for myself or buy at the school restaurant and the ones made by my mum and sisters. There’s something special about home-cooked meals during Christmas. Besides the chicken, the fridge would be stocked with drinks like Pepsi and Fanta.
Another thing that makes Christmas special is the atmosphere at home. As soon as we arrive, it’s easy to tell that it’s Christmas because of the decorations. The Christmas lights are always on, glowing in green and red, giving the house a festive and cheerful vibe. It’s a magical feeling that I never get tired of, no matter how old I get.
When I think of Christmas, I’m reminded of some of my favorite memories. One of the best parts of the season was when my older brother used to send each of us 100,000 naira as Christmas money to enjoy ourselves. That money was a game-changer for me. I would use it to buy new clothes and make sure I looked my absolute best throughout the season. Trust me, once you saw me, you’d know I wasn’t playing around during Christmas.
One particular memory stands out to me. Back in secondary school, I didn’t have a smartphone, and it felt like everyone else around me did. Then, one Christmas, my brother sent us the usual money, and I decided to do something different. I took 40,000 naira out of it and bought myself a Vivo smartphone. It was the first phone I ever got for myself, and I still remember how happy and proud I felt. That Christmas was actually a milestone for me—a moment of independence and joy.
Christmas is truly a special time of the year, and despite the limited days I’ll have to prepare this year, I know I’ll still cherish every moment. From the food to the lights ,the holidays and the memories, it’s a season that always feels magical.
