Favourite Christmas music

Greetings!

Talking about a favorite Christmas song, it’s unfortunate I can’t settle on just one. However, I have three that I can’t take anything away from. Maybe with time, more will join the list, but I love the fact that ever since I’ve been into music and celebrating Christmas, it’s been just these three that I hold in high regard. In fact, it was just two before this year until a new one was added to the list, making it three. These songs may not be the sweetest or most popular Christmas songs, but what makes me love them are the memories they hold and the way I got to start loving them. Without further ado, below are the songs:

  1. When a Child Is Born by Johnny Mathis, Boney M, and many others

First of all, the real owner of this song is still confusing to me to this day, and that’s because I got tired of researching and getting different answers.

I found this video more enchanting

This song is the first on my list whenever it comes to Christmas songs. I fell in love with it around 2017 or so, when I was in my hometown and the children in our church were using it for rehearsal for their Christmas carol night. Actually, I didn’t know the song until that day when our pastor’s wife came to me, asking for help to download a particular Christmas song she didn’t know the title of. She started singing some lines for me to search on Google, and wow, she had such a beautiful voice that it tickled my brain to find the song quickly.

I remember when she started with, “A ray of hope flickers in the sky...” Jeeeeez! Even as I write this, the memories are so fresh. That particular family, I mean the pastor and his wife, is the best I’ve been under because of the good bond and memories we shared. Whenever this song plays, it reminds me of them. Sadly, as life would have it, it’s been up to 10 years since they left, and we haven’t seen each other.

  1. Mary, Did You Know? by Pentatonix

This song, though not the best among all the Christmas songs, has a special place in my heart, and I can’t even explain at length why I love it so much.

Funny enough, it was during Christmas two years ago that I got to know this song. It was Christmas Eve, and I was listening to the radio when this song came on and captured my heart. I didn’t know the title or the singers; I just kept hearing the lyrics, “Mary, did you know?” On the spot, I searched for it and discovered that it’s actually a big and popular Christmas song with over 300 million views on YouTube. Wow! Ever since then, I’ve been in love with it.

  1. Everybody Loves Christmas by Everybody Loves Jenifa’s Crew

This is the most recent addition to my collection, and it will surprise you to know that it was released this month (December) and this year (2024). This song, though not lyrically profound as other major Christmas songs, captured my heart when I saw the video and the bond shared in it, portraying that Christmas is truly all about love.

It’s a song from the movie, Everybody Loves Jenifa, and it was done by all the artists and actresses in the movie, with Falz and D’banj as the major musicians. To me, this song is the biggest Christmas song in Nigeria. You can't beat that!

Thanks for reading.

This is my entry to Hiveghana prompt of the week.
