Education the Key to Success, But with a Back up plan (Plan B)

I grew up hearing my father talk about how he received three different job offers immediately after graduating. That was back in the day. He often mentioned that in those days, all that mattered was completing your education, as job opportunities were readily available. The only challenge was deciding where to work. This belief made everyone accept the saying, "Education is the key to success," which was, and still is, largely true.

However, fast forward to the 21st century, the situation is very different from the story my father told me. Today, many people spend years searching for jobs after graduation. Some, even with higher qualifications, end up accepting low-paying jobs just to survive. This alarming trend has caused many to question whether education is still the key to success. Some even joke about it, asking, "If education is still the key to success, are we sure the government hasn’t changed the padlock?" While these questions may sound amusing, they reflect real concerns because the reality of today’s world no longer aligns with that popular saying.

If you ask me whether something has changed, I would say, "Not really." The challenges that make people doubt whether education is still the key to success can be linked to the following factors:

Source

  1. Population Explosion

Population explosion is one major factor contributing to this problem. The rapid growth of the global population, especially in developing countries, has led to an increasing number of graduates entering the labor market every year. Unfortunately, industries and businesses have not expanded at the same pace to absorb this growing workforce. On the other hand, governments are also unable to provide sufficient job opportunities.

This imbalance can be explained using the economic principle of supply and demand: when the demand for jobs is high, but the supply is limited, competition becomes fierce. This often leads to a "survival of the fittest" scenario, where only the most qualified, skilled, or well-connected individuals secure jobs, leaving many educated people struggling to survive.

  1. Connections (Networking)

In today’s world, who you know can be just as important as what you know. Networking has become essential, and a lack of good connections can limit one’s chances of getting a job, no matter how qualified they are.

  1. Technological Advancements

While technology has brought many benefits, it has also displaced many traditional jobs. Machines and artificial intelligence now perform tasks that were once done by humans, reducing the number of available roles in various sectors.

The Way Forward

Despite these challenges, education remains the key to success. However, education alone is no longer enough. This means having a backup plan (Plan B) is necessary.

Plan B may include:

Entrepreneurial Ventures: Starting your own business or exploring opportunities for self-employment.

Acquiring Additional Skills: Learning new, in-demand skills that complement your formal education.

Pursuing Alternative Career Paths: Exploring careers outside your original field of study.

Conclusion

In conclusion, while education remains a vital key to success, it needs to be complemented with backup plans to help navigate the challenges of the 21st century. With the right approach, individuals can overcome these obstacles and achieve their goals.
