The prompt of this week's #hiveghana prompts offers us the opportunity to share our views on a "Fresh Perspectives on Global Unemployment". It has not been rosy in my country as 80% of youths in the country are unemployed.
Undoubtedly, the issue of unemployment in this country is a great issue for concern. This issue has been a thing of concern even since our forefathers times, when we finish our tertiary education we are promised of a good future by our politicians when campaigning during their elections, but when they get into office, reverse is the case. They only strive to greedily fill their pockets and send their children or family abroad for better education and good jobs.
Their family members and close friends keep enriching themselves and rotate the governmental positions between themselves. The rich keeps enriching themselves and the poor keeps getting poorer. Thanks to the resilience and hardworking spirit that the Nigerians have, many would have die of hunger, homelessness and so on. We work so hard doing menial jobs, being creative at our crafts just to be able to put food on the table.
HOW CAN UNEMPLOYMENT BE MANAGED
There are several ways unemployment can be managed, for instance
IMPROVE SKILLS: it is evident that education is no longer enough for an individual to break the barrier of unemployment issues, hence one would need additional skills to progress In life. For example, a student that studied computer science, could after school get extra tutoring in coding, graphic designing, ux/UI design and so on. It will be helpful for him or her in the future to create jobs for themselves without having to struggle with government jobs and make money.
TALENT: this is another aspect people should work on. Overtime we have seen people with talents born with them but it's never enough. This is why musician go to music school to enrich themselves with musical knowledge and grow their brands to become international. Even actors and actresses, go to film academy to foster the growth of their acting careers.
VOCATIONAL CAREER DEVELOPMENT :vocational training is another means the government has tried in order to cut down the high rise of unemployment. Sometimes it has been a success and other times it has be a failure. This can be beneficial to keep people off the street, as government or non governmental organizations create employment opportunities by providing a training center where people can learn sewing, artisan, carpentry, electrician, cobbler and so on.
AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT : the country is blessed with natural resources and agriculture is one of them. Thus when the government provides the right modern equipment and employ enough laborers it will also help to curb food scarcity while at the same time curbing unemployment.
I believe these are great perspectives that can curb the endless increase in unemployment globally and locally.
