I remember visiting a friend last month. We streamed a movie online and after the movie ended, a cooking show was up next. The dish that was displayed looked really appealing and so we both decided to watch. It was a traditional dish of the Kogi state people that looked very similar to the regular melon soup that I know. Few minutes into the show, my friend was already scrutinizing and making comments, not about the food but about the chef.
The chef was doing so many things wrong. For starters, she had extremely long nails on, she licked her cooking spoon from time to time, she barely washed her veggie before slicing them and at the end of the day, she shared this meal with a celebrity who was invited on the show. I couldn't help but wonder why? Why didn't the videographer cut out the awful scenes as usual? Because they always do. Was he tired of concealing the lies?
Social media has two sides to it; the fake side and the real side. Many people fall for the fake aspect of social media and they spend their whole lives trying to emulate a stereotype that may not even be real.
People would do anything to get likes, shares and reactions because to some, it's a money making venture and to others, it's just a form of entertainment.
should people be judged by their social media profiles?
Absolutely not. I say this because irrespective of what people show to their viewers, there is an aspect of a person's life that they choose to keep private. We could easily judge people because of what they show the world but before we judge people, we should ensure that we know the full story and also ensure that we are flawless. Of course we all have flaws right?
I have this high school friend who always wanted to be a public figure. An influencer of some sort. She knew what she wanted from a young age and she vehemently worked towards actualizing it. She tried school debates, talks, and every other thing that could put her on the radar but everyone kept telling her she wasn't good enough. They always had some bad remarks. “You opened your mouth too wide. You laughed too much. Your eyes were twitching. Blah blah”.
Being a persistent young lady, she decided to change her strategy. Since no one wanted to accept the sweet version of her, she turned sassy. The sassy influencer who doesn't care about anything and it worked! She gained more recognition and is doing pretty well today. Only because she gave the public “what they wanted”. The image she portrays may not be who she truly is, but she portrays it either way.
The things we see on social media can affect us detrimentally if we let it. Like my mom always says “do not believe everything you see on social media”. In summary, I would like to say that social media exists for ‘’entertainment’’ and ‘’information” not to change our life for the worst or to make us feel terrible about ourselves.
