The piercing howl tore through the night, sending shivers down the sisters' spines. They hugged each other tightly, tears rolling down their cheeks.

-Mom..., -sobbed the eldest.

Outside, in the cold light of the full moon, the beast howled again, this time with a wail so deep it seemed to come from hell itself.

Its claws clawed at the earth, clawing its way through the clearing.

The sisters held their breath as the creature advanced toward the wildflower-covered grave. It paused and sniffed the air, its elongated snout pointing at the plain headstone where their beloved mother lay.

With an animalistic sob, the beast collapsed on the grave, its body convulsing with each breath. His eyes, so familiar, met those of the girls through the window.

It was only an instant, but in that moment it all made sense. Mom was still watching over them, even from the other side, her undying love protecting them from the cruel curse she now carried.

When the sun rose, only footprints remained in the clearing where the beast had been.
