Do we live in a Cyberpunk World? Yes, we do.
Do we live in a Cyberpunk World? Yes, we do.
We are already living in a cyberpunk world, we just never realized it.
A good friend of mine has been saying this for the last years: "Looks like we're living in a shitty version of Blade Runner 2049, with all the poverty and social problems, but without the fun glowy purple lights and without a naked Ana de Armas".
You probably already know, but nonetheless: the term “cyberpunk” refers to a dystopian future where technology has advanced, but society remains poor and destitute. As we look around us, it is becoming increasingly clear that this is our current reality. There is an abundance of incredible new technologies that look like science fiction, but the majority of the population is still suffering from the lack of basic needs like food and sanitation.
We can see the dystopian future of cyberpunk in many of the aspects of our daily lives. Social media has become a dominant force in our lives, with people uploading their thoughts and activities to the internet for all to see and for the big companies to thoughtfully analyze everything of their lives in order to deliver cat food advertisement.
The rise of powerful corporations in itself, mainly the huge tech conglomerates in the Silicon Valley, that are able to influence our lives and control the economy, is going exactly as the cyberpunk novels told us. There are a few pockets of resistance here and there that try to curb this influence of the tech companies, including us here on Hive; but for the most part, people just seem to accept that "that's how things are", as if it was normal for a company to know where we are 24/7, what we think, what we like, and even monitoring our moods.
We have seen the rise of artificial intelligence and robotics, especially now with all these ChatGPT / OpenAI shenanigans, which has changed the way we work and interact with each other. We can't even read a content or enjoy an image without being sure if the content was created by a real human or by some sort of software that's just copying billions of stuff from the internet and regurgitating that for us.
Despite the technological advancement, there are still large portions of the population that are unable to access these benefits. Many people are living in poverty and struggling to meet their basic needs. This is especially true in developing countries, like my own, where a lack of infrastructure and resources limit access to technology and economic opportunities. Not only that, but the technology itself is now sabotaging the poor people, since this technology is now replacing the work done by these poorly educated people. Again, artificial intelligence comes up: how many millions of jobs will be eliminated in the next few years because a software is now able to do a person's job in a matter of minutes? Of course, this bill will be passed on to the poor, and not to the millionaires and big companies.
In order to avoid the cyberpunk future, we must ensure that everyone has access to the benefits of modern technology. We must improve infrastructure in both developing countries and poorer areas of already developed countries, so that everyone has access to the internet, education, and healthcare. Additionally, we must focus on creating more jobs and economic opportunities so that everyone has the chance to benefit from the advances in technology. We must work to create a more equitable society, where everyone has access to the reasonable economic opportunities.
We can avoid the dystopian future of the cyberpunk world and ensure that everyone has the chance to benefit from the advances in technology.
We can.
But I don't think we'll actually do it.
