Asistiendo a la escenificación de la Batalla de La Victoria (Venezuela) / Attending the staging of Battle of La Victoria (Venezuela)

Saludos hivers. En Venezuela, específicamente en La Victoria, cada 12 de febrero se celebra la Batalla de La Victoria y el Día de la juventud. Durante este mes, y en especial en la semana que corresponde a esta fecha, se realizan diferentes actividades culturales, deportivas y de entretenimiento para conmemorar esta gesta histórica tan importante para la independencia de Venezuela.

Hello hivers. In Venezuela, specifically in La Victoria, every February 12, we celebrate the Battle of La Victoria and Youth Day. During this month, and especially in the week that corresponds to this date, different cultural, sports and entertainment activities are carried out to commemorate this historical feat that is so important for the independence of Venezuela.

Una de las actividades que se llevan a cabo en la semana del 12 de febrero, es la escenificación de la Batalla de La Victoria, esta es una obra de teatro al aire libre en la cual participan jóvenes de diferentes liceos. El lugar varía, pero por lo general la hacen en el parque La Estación o en la principal plaza de la ciudad, la plaza Ribas. Este año la hicieron en el parque. Este día es feriado en la ciudad, y aunque la mayoría de los negocios están abiertos, no hay clases, y mucha gente aprovecha para llevar a sus hijos a tener una cita con la historia.

One of the activities that take place in the week of February 12 is the staging of the Battle of La Victoria, this is an open-air play in which young people from different high schools participate. The location varies, but generally they do it in La Estación park or in the main square of the city, Plaza Ribas. This year they did it in the park. This day is a holiday in the city, and although most stores are open, there are no classes, and many people take the opportunity to take their children to have a date with history.

Me encanta todo lo que tiene que ver con la historia, y casi siempre voy a ver la obra, esta vez me pareció una excelente idea hacer fotos para compartir este evento aquí en Hive 😁, este año la hicieron el lunes 10 de febrero. La escenificación estaba planificada para las 12 del mediodía, pero como ya sabemos, en Venezuela los horarios no son muy puntuales 😬🥴😂🤷🏻‍♀️. Coincidiendo con esta actividad estaba la llegada de los cadetes de la Universidad Militar Bolivariana de Venezuela que cada año realizan la Cabalgata y marcha histórica. Esta caminata comprende el recorrido de 64 kms que hizo el general José Félix Ribas desde Caracas hasta La Victoria, junto a un grupo de jóvenes y seminaristas para enfrentar a las tropas realistas de Francisco Tomás Morales.

I love everything that has to do with history, and I almost always go to see the play, this time I thought it was an excellent idea to take photos to share this event here on Hive 😁, this year they did it on Monday, February 10. The staging was planned for 12 noon, but as we already know, in Venezuela the schedules are not very punctual 😬🥴😂🤷🏻‍♀️. Coinciding with this activity was the arrival of the cadets from the Bolivarian Military University of Venezuela who each year carry out the historical parade and march. This walk includes the 64 km route that General José Félix Ribas made from Caracas to La Victoria, together with a group of young people and seminarians to confront the royalist troops of Francisco Tomás Morales.

Estuve un rato en la plaza viendo llegar a los cadetes y aproveché para hacer unas fotos, en especial de los caballos que estaban descansando después de estar tres días haciendo el recorrido histórico que trajo al general José Félix Ribas hasta La Victoria para librar una de las batallas más importantes de la guerra de independencia de Venezuela. Después me uní a uno de los grupos de cadetes en dirección al parque La Estación donde se haría la escenificación de la batalla.

I spent a while in the square watching the cadets arrive and took the opportunity to take some photos, especially of the horses that were resting after spending three days doing the historical route that brought General José Félix Ribas to La Victoria to fight one of the most important battles of the Venezuelan war of independence. Afterwards I joined one of the groups of cadets heading to La Estación park where the battle would be staged.

Al llegar al parque ya había varios grupos de cadetes allí, algunos aún en formación y otros, descansando y comiendo, en sus rostros se podía ver el cansancio y el agotamiento, tres días caminando, acampando y como los escuché decir por ahí a varios, tres días sin bañarse jajaja, sin duda deben haber sido días de mucho cansancio pero a la vez, llenos de mucha emoción, satisfacción y anécdotas que contar. A los que hacen la caminata por primera vez les entregan una medalla como recuerdo.

Upon arriving at the park there were already several groups of cadets there, some still in training and others, resting and eating, on their faces you could see the tiredness and exhaustion, three days walking, camping and as I heard several of them say, three days without bathing hahaha, without a doubt they must have been very tired days but at the same time, filled with a lot of emotion, satisfaction and anecdotes to tell. Those who do the walk for the first time are given a medal as a souvenir.

Estamos en época de sequía así que aparte de los árboles y algunos arbustos, el parque no tiene mucha vegetación, el sol del mediodía es bastante fuerte aquí, pero al estar en este bosque, se sentía fresco. Todo estaba listo y mientras esperábamos que llegaran las autoridades, o sea, el alcalde y la gobernadora, aproveché para seguir haciendo más fotos. La luz a veces era favorecedora y otras no, pero no le di mucha importancia a ese detalle jajaja.

We are in the dry season so apart from the trees and some bushes, the park doesn't have much vegetation, the midday sun is quite strong here, but being in this forest, it felt cool. Everything was ready and while we waited for the authorities to arrive, that is, the mayor and the governor, I took the opportunity to continue taking more photos. The light was sometimes flattering and other times not, but I didn't give much importance to that detail hahaha.

Ejército de los patriotas / Patriots army

Finalmente la obra de teatro iba a empezar. Febrero de 1814, ante la inminente llegada del ejército de Boves, quien habiendo quedado gravemente herido en otra batalla designa a Tomás Morales como jefe del ejército realista, Simón Bolívar le solicita al general José Félix Ribas que defienda la ciudad de La Victoria, en vista de la poca disponibilidad de soldados, a Ribas no le queda otra opción que reclutar a jóvenes y seminaristas. La ventaja es considerable, el ejército de Morales cuenta con unos 4000 soldados, mientras que el ejército patriota de Ribas con apenas 1500, la mayoría de ellos jóvenes inexpertos de entre 12 y 20 años.

Finally the play was going to begin. February 1814, faced with the imminent arrival of Boves' army, who, having been seriously injured in another battle, appointed Tomás Morales as head of the royalist army, Simón Bolívar asked General José Félix Ribas to defend the city of La Victoria. In view of the limited availability of soldiers, Ribas had no other option but to recruit young people and seminarians. The advantage is considerable, Morales' army has about 4,000 soldiers, while Ribas's patriot army has barely 1,500, most of them inexperienced young people between 12 and 20 years old.

La determinación de José Félix Ribas es inquebrantable, sabe que la mayoría de los jóvenes que ha reclutado nunca han estado en una batalla y mucho menos han tomado un fusil o una espada en las manos, sin embargo, confía en la valentía de ellos y horas antes de enfrentar al enemigo pronuncia un discurso que será clave para motivar a estos jóvenes a luchar hasta el último aliento:

Soldados: Lo que tanto hemos deseado se realizará hoy: he ahí a Boves. Cinco veces mayor es el ejército que trae a combatirnos; pero aún me parece escaso para disputarnos la victoria. Defendéis del furor de los tiranos la vida de vuestros hijos, el honor de vuestras esposas, el suelo de la patria; mostrales vuestra omnipotencia. En esta jornada que será memorable, ni aun podemos optar entre vencer o morir: ¡necesario es vencer! ¡Viva la República!

José Félix Ribas' determination is unwavering. He knows that most of the young people he has recruited have never been in a battle, much less have they ever taken a rifle or a sword in their hands. However, he trusts their bravery and hours before facing the enemy he delivers a speech that will be key to motivating these young people to fight until their last breath:

Soldiers: What we have desired so much will come true today: here is Boves. Five times larger is the army he brings to fight us; but it still seems insufficient to dispute the victory. You defend the lives of your children, the honor of your wives, the soil of the country from the fury of tyrants; show them your omnipotence. On this day that will be memorable, we cannot even choose between winning or dying: it's necessary to win! Long live to the Republic!"

La batalla empezó alrededor de las 8 de la mañana del 12 de febrero de 1814 cuando Morales y su poderoso ejército atacan a La Victoria. Gracias a su experiencia y habilidades como estratega, el general Ribas había cercado algunos puntos claves de la ciudad, lo que ayudó a repeler varios intentos realistas destinados a romper las líneas defensivas patrióticas. Ribas cuenta con el apoyo del general Mariano Montilla y de Luis María Rivas Dávila.

The battle began around 8 in the morning on February 12, 1814 when Morales and his powerful army attacked La Victoria. Thanks to his experience and skills as a strategist, General Ribas had surrounded some key points of the city, which helped repel several royalist attempts aimed at breaking the patriotic defensive lines. Ribas has the support of General Mariano Montilla and Luis María Rivas Dávila.

El sol de mediodía calienta aún más el agitado campo de batalla, el ejército realista, con tropas mucho mas experimentadas va mermando al ejército de Ribas, superado hasta dos veces en hombres, sin embargo, ni Ribas ni los jóvenes que lo acompañan se rinden y continúan luchando con una entrega total por la causa independentista. El campo se llena de cuerpos ensangrentados, algunos muertos, algunos aún con vida. Con gran valentía muchas mujeres corren a ayudar a los que van cayendo.

The midday sun heats up the hectic battlefield even more, the royalist army, with much more experienced troops, is reducing Ribas's army, up to twice outnumbered in men, however, neither Ribas nor the young people who accompany him give up and continue fighting with total dedication for the independence cause. The field is filled with bloody bodies, some dead, some still alive. With great courage, many women run to help those who are falling.

Rivas Dávila es herido de muerte en el campo de batalla, al sacarle la bala que le producirá la muerte le dice a sus compañeros: "Llevadla a mi esposa y decidle que la conserve y se acuerde que a ella debo el momento más glorioso de mi vida, aquel en que he perecido defendiendo la causa de mi suelo..." / Rivas Dávila was mortally wounded on the battlefield. When they removed the bullet that would cause his death, he told his companions: "Take it to my wife and tell her to keep it and remember that I owe this bullet the most glorious moment of my life, the one in which I perished defending the cause of my land..."

Son las 5 de la tarde y la batalla continúa, los realistas están arrinconados en la plaza Mayor. A pesar de las significativas bajas, José Félix Ribas no se rinde, logra mantener a su ejército con la moral en alto y resistiendo. En cierto momento, sintiéndose ya perdido, le pide a la Virgen de La Inmaculada Concepción, La Vencedora, que está justo ahí frente al campo de batalla, en la Iglesia Matriz Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, un milagro para ganar esta lucha. Finalmente llegan los refuerzos, aparece Vicente Campo Elias con sus tropas y se une a la batalla, poco después logran vencer a los realistas quienes huyen hacia las montañas perseguidos por la caballería patriota.

It's 5 in the afternoon and the battle continues, the royalists are cornered in the Plaza Mayor. Despite the significant casualties, José Félix Ribas doesn't give up, he manages to keep his army with high morale and resisting. At a certain point, feeling already lost, he asks for a miracle to win this fight to the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception, La Vencedora, who is right there in front of the battlefield, in the Matrix Church of Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. Finally the reinforcements arrive, Vicente Campo Elias appears with his troops and joins the battle, shortly after they manage to defeat the royalists who flee towards the mountains pursued by the patriot cavalry.

Después de más de diez horas, la batalla termina, unas 2000 personas entre ambos bandos han muerto, incluído Luis María Rivas Dávila. El ejército patriota del general José Félix Ribas se proclama vencedor. Esta batalla fue clave en la lucha por la independencia de Venezuela. En 1947 se decretó que cada 12 de febrero se celebraría el Día de la juventud, como homenaje y reconocimiento a todos los jóvenes que ese glorioso día lucharon y dieron sus vidas por la libertad de Venezuela.

After more than ten hours, the battle ends, about 2000 people on both sides have died, including Luis María Rivas Dávila. The patriotic army of General José Félix Ribas is proclaimed the winner. This battle was key in the fight for Venezuela's independence. In 1947 it was decreed that Youth Day would be celebrated every February 12, as a tribute and recognition to all the young people who on that glorious day fought and gave their lives for the freedom of Venezuela.

Conocer nuestra historia y todo el camino recorrido hasta nuestros días nos inspira a apreciar a todas esas personas que jamás conoceremos pero que con gran valentía y determinación lucharon por la independencia del país. La historia es algo que siempre me conmueve profundamente así que asistir a esta escenificación me hizo no solamente disfrutar de esta actividad, sino también ponerme por unos minutos en el lugar de todos los protagonistas de este momento de la historia. Siempre me he preguntado por qué esta épica batalla no tiene una película 😕, sería genial.

Knowing our history and the entire path traveled to the present day inspires us to appreciate all those people that we will never meet but who with great courage and determination fought for the country's independence. History is something that always moves me deeply, so attending this performance made me not only enjoy this activity, but also put myself for a few minutes in the shoes of all the protagonists of this moment in history. I've always wondered why this epic battle doesn't have a movie 😕, that would be great.
