Behind the Scenes of Village Carnival Festivities

Carnival time is here

This is the first time our community has held a carnival. It seems a lot more festive than the region’s carnival. While it’s only for our village, safe to say there is going to be a lot of people as it involves each neighborhood unit. There will be more than 40 people in each neighborhood unit and each of them are going to wear some type of costume depending on the theme. I heard that this carnival will have 48 units participating.

My neighborhood unit is pretty small and mostly consists of elderly. So, it was a little difficult for us to organize things but we did.

I decided to help out by decorating the car, which is pretty humble. We are not as well-funded as other neighborhood units but we still tried our best.We have two cars that will participate in the events. The first car will be used to store sound systems and drinks and snacks. Meanwhile the second car will be decorated to look beautiful and with a back to nature theme. This is the main car that will be decorated as back to nature theme.

Most of the costumes that people will wear will also be recycled products. Some of them you can see over here. There are more tomorrow and I'll most likely walk with them being a photographer. I am not confident but I hope the god of lighting will favor me and my pictures 🤣

The people in my neighborhood unit also make this type of hats that people will wear during the carnival. I can't wait to see how people look like wearing this hat and even decorations such as these ones below.

One of my neighbor has a very talented child, he designed all these things and made it from recycled products. Unfortunately, he was booked by other neighborhood units, so he won't be with us during the carnival.

Typically, carnival is held by town but these days each village wanted to organized their own. It's fair because around here, there are talented people who can make things like that and needed a place to showcase their works. At the same time, it gives people a sense of community that has eroded lately. So, it's like a very positive events. Obviously, there were drama all around though but I'd like to tell everyone around me to just focus on the positives.

I do hope I get more pictures tomorrow and even better pictures.

I love to see how they organize for carnival! I think there is no better celebration for the people than to be in contact with this, so festive and of our origin! I congratulate you and send you a huge greeting, I hope to see more and that everything turns out excellent!!!

That's true! it's really the community spirit we're after and that's what we felt. Hopefully I get to share the pictures soon.

En Canadá es carnaval ahorita? Wao. Que excelente poder conocer eso de otros países. En Venezuela el carnaval es en febrero - marzo.

over here carnival happens during August since it's indonesian's independence day.

Looking forward to the photos from the carnival. Best wishes for a successful carnival.

Thank you!

While it’s only for our village, safe to say there is going to be a lot of people as it involves each neighborhood unit.

This sounds like a fun activity, especially as it brings people together to share and celebrate. Can you explain what you mean by a "neighbourhood unit"? Is it something carnival-related only or is this how you actually divide the neighbourhood (like a prefecture in Japan)?

We were colonized by Japan so we partly inherited their governance system. Neighborhood unit was something we inherited from them. Back in the day they used Tonarigumi and Azazyookai which are the smallest unit of a neighborhood. Tonarigumi usually consist of let's say 10-15 houses while Azazyookai is a collective part of Tonarigumi. In the past, the function is to control the mass and easier collaboration with the higher ups. I think Japan loves hierarchy so that's why it all breaks down to the smallest unit.

These days we are still the same. After the neighborhood unit then there's neighborhood association, then there's hamlet, then there's village and it all goes up to the local district and so on.

In this case, prefectures is like our provinces and that is a massive area. We have like 40.67 million people just in our province. So, neighborhood units are really the smallest fraction of each government bodies 🤣but still a lot of people

Interesting! This does sound very Japanese with the meticulous attention to detail.

We have like 40.67 million people just in our province.

Holy smokes! I thought you lived in a small quaint little island surrounded by coconuts 🌴

Ours are loose neighborhoods with exciting names like the West end, the East side, North Shore, South Granville...haha. Vancouver proper (downtown) where I live has 662,000 people. The general area of metro Vancouver is made up of connected cities like Burnaby, Port Coquitlam, Surrey, and so on. This Greater Vancouver area has 2.6 million people. The province of British Columbia, where the city of Vancouver is located, is huge geographically but only has 5 million people, so the province is mostly mountains, forests, and water. We still have ways to go to reach 40 million inhabitants. :D

I wish haha but yeah, considering the country is 4th most populous in the world, those are rookie numbers. We have a lot of people here and the declining birthrate might be a good thing tbh. I think it's gonna take a long time before you can reach 40 million and you don't want that either, it's pretty much crowded and extremely dense

Canada as a whole has 40 million people, so we're small fry in comparison. :)

PIZZA!

Street dances and creative costumes are often the things that I often mostly look up in a festival. Your neighborhood are creative. That would surely be fun.

😄 The wereawesome dresses at the carnival and street dancers too. I thought people wouldn't be so excited but damn, they were pouring a lot of money in this small carnival.
