Stranded at Lock 91

in #hive-1782654 months ago

We had met up with two couples travelling together in two narrowboats. They warned us that lock 91 had a dodgy gate that required eight people to open it. Hubby and I were also travelling with another couple on another boat, sharing the locks, so we made mental note of the horror that awaited us five locks ahead.

@millycf1976-14.jpg

Hubby and the other male occupant got creative and tied a long pole with a rope in front of the gap in the broken gate to reduce the amount of water leakage from the lock chamber. That's because we needed the water level in the chamber to be as close to the level of the water in the open canal as possible, and then, with force, try to open the gate.

I dread it whenever I see a written note at a lock.

Even though the writings were on the wall, all four of us pushed powerfully, but without even a slight movement, as the water resistance was so strong.
So, our best bet was to wait for another boater to arrive and assist.

Like a convoy, the third couple moored up next to us, and in true camaraderie, all six of us were ready, on our mark, and pushing and pulling forcibly to get the wretched gate open.

I cannot imagine what hubby and I would have done if we had been travelling solo on a quiet day with no other boaters or able pedestrians in sight.

Untitled design-202.jpg

Yes, the River and Canals maintenance crew was working on some locks earlier. However, all six of us were determined to continue our journey, as there was an update that there was maintenance scheduled to be done on lock 91 four days later.

It is amazing what we can achieve when we work together towards a common goal. We all agreed that it was a distressing and daunting adventure, but our determination made the day enjoyable and unforgettable.

More arrestingly beautiful nature along the rivers and canals.

7.jpg

Life on the canals is slow, and there's no point in being in a hurry; however, we are on a mission to get our boat onto the Oxford canals as we make our way to the East Midlands, in stages.

11.jpg

In the meantime, I'm capturing shots of nature along the cut of this canal, which has a wild and free look with overgrown shrubs.

14.jpg

16.jpg

It's such a friendly community here on the network, with boaters who look out for each other. Also, the greenery is soothing, and it helps us and other boaters to remain calm when faced with unexpected maintenance and mishaps that happen frequently while afloat.

15.jpg

In the distance across the fields, there is a castle-like-looking building that's framed beautifully by clouds and trees. My curiosity piques, but we carry on going with the flow.

Courteous passersby assisted us with another stubborn lock.

It's our first time in this neck of the woods, but comparing the locks along this network with several of the others that we have travelled, a paradigm shift is needed in the way the canals and rivers are operated, to put some funds into the upkeep of the network.

We love this lifestyle on the canals, and we would happily comply in any way to help the trust improve the experience.

Approaching new territories.

After leaving the Kenneth and Avon Canals, we entered the River Avon and then the River Kenneth in Newbury, where we spent the night.

13.jpg

I walked a long distance along the rivers as my husband cruised along before finding a gap to pull over for me to jump back on. It was relaxing.

18.jpg

Large trees canopied the river banks, which limited the stream of sunshine for our solar panel. However, after long days on the move, our battery power is good for the night until we continue, preferably with one of the other boaters.

19.jpg

This has been a familiar yet mysterious adventure so far. We are learning more about life on the canals and rivers daily, as we improve on our daily schedules. We are excited and looking forward to going onto the River Thames, where I'll share more of my adventures with you.

With many hands, it sure does look seamless. The power of teamwork 💪🏽 The view is amazing 🤩

Haha! Yeah, looking back at the video clipping just now, it looks deceptively easy 😁

It sure does😅

Thank you so much for those photos. It's been the only entertaining thing today 😏 and they are so beautiful.

I walked a long distance along the rivers as my husband cruised along before finding a gap to pull over for me to jump back on. It was relaxing.

Nice! No snakes? 😆

Have a safe and relaxing trip to the East Midlands, and good luck with the next locks!

Nice! No snakes? 😆

My eyes were peeled. Luckily the river water is clear and looks a lot cleaner than the canals, so I would have taken the leap of faith in the river, although I cannot swim 😂

Have a safe and relaxing trip to the East Midlands.

Thank you. We have a long distance to go, so we started cruising at 6:30 this morning (the earliest we've ever started). Hubby goes away to work tomorrow, so we need to get to a location that is safe for me to stay alone for 4 days.
We're chugging along:)))

Love it when people help each other ❤️

Man, the unison is amazing:)))

very beautiful place I was very entertained to see it

It seems like a way to get something completely new. A pleasant experience and you share it as happiness. Have a nice day, Milly :)

Haha! The lock gate nearly finished us all off, but we were laughing like a crazy bunch for opening it.

Thanks for stopping by:)))

Now I have been able to read. I am resuming my routines at home as I have been on holiday. I love this journey you are on and I see the locks as great challenges, so it's comforting to know that the sailing community is so supportive of each other during your travels. Wow, I would definitely love to experience that for a season. 😁 There really is so much I would like to experience. I need to stay focused for the achievement of every purpose.

It's very pleasing to read you, a hug.

Hello dear friend @millycf1976 good morning
It is good that on their navigation path they meet kind people willing to collaborate with the tasks of the locks, if not for that, navigation through the canal would be a tragedy.

What a beautiful day, a beautiful blue sky, and a terrain covered in nature. beautiful shots.

Thank you very much for sharing this experience

Hey @jlufer
Yes, it would have been a tragedy without the help, indeed. Some of these gates are 2500 KG to begin, so it would have been impossible to move them when blocked, without the added people.

It was all fun and laughter, that I cannot imagine being the reaction on any other mode of transportation:0
Have a nice day!

This isn't just an interesting post but one with a vital lesson. There is so much we can achieve with cooperation and it would have been impossible for you and husby to pass through without the help of others who also need your help.

I am wondering why such locks are there but it seems they are faulty. I am glad you guy found eachother, have a great night...

It's all a lack of funds I believe. The locks are hundreds of years old, and the River and Canal Trust are always out doing maintenance during winter months especially. However, there's neglect this side:)

Thank you so much brumest and the @qurator team:)

It's lucky that you met so many helpful people along the way. Team work makes the dream work as they say.

Great photo and video of you folks 💪

Man, if there were no team, our schedule would have been fucked. I think the work started at the lock today, but you never know how long it will take for them to finish up.
We're now on the River Thames and it's so gorgeous.

I had volunteered to take the photo and video while, but a cyclist offered to do it.
Great fun, but I think these logs are the heaviest things I've ever pushed. One gate is normally around 2500 KG, and manageable when the system is functioning, but when it's broken, my god... it takes all your might...😁

Wow thats very heavy. I imagine that it would be quite the work out. I look forward to seeing more photos of your journey along the Thames

I'll share them soon. It has been an unforgettable experience so far and nothing like we've ever done:)))

Sounds amazing!

What strikes me as particularly wonderful here is the existence of the note itself. That brotherhood of travelers (or in this case boaters) is always so touching, i think. If only that translated to other areas of our world, you know, not just in smaller, niched communities.

Ever onward, my friend. <3

is the existence of the note itself.

💯%
That coupled with the fact that the other boaters had warned us prepared us. The third boat that pulled up were familiar with this stretch of the canals, and they say there has been a problem with lock 91 for a long time. However, it made me think about which other mode of transport would you find people who look out for each other in this way.

I have paper and tape too, and will extend the courtesy in the future:)))

:)) Despite those difficult locks, I see that you are having a great time! (and watching the video, it seems to me that it's like having a "gym included" in the travle pack)... Nice people working together, that's good!... And this is a post that I really enjoyed looking at, especially because of those deeply green fields around the canal, a charming landscape for me!... Thank you for sharing and blessings to you @millycf1976 friend and @scubahead friend!

Yes, it's a full-body workout, but just knowing that it was indeed possible with a lot of effort, was consoling.

I haven't seen such beautiful nature in a calm area in a long time.

Thanks for stopping by as always:)))

Holding and standing together can change everything 🙂 I am once again surprised how many different boats are there to float and slow down people. Its something we dont have in Austria, the so very slow flowing rivers 😘

Oh yeah! The network is massive with various kinds of boaters, whether continuous cruisers, day boat rentals, or people from marinas who go out on the cut.
Haha! I can't imagine going down a fast river on a narrowboat. It's already strong currents here, and anything faster would be so scary:)))

Probably even dangerous with other boats at the moment with lots of rain and highwaters 🙏 but you are safe where you are ❤️

Yeah, I can imagine it to be iffy with all the rain.
Yes, we're relatively safe, thankfully ❤️

Haha 😂😂😂 I made the 1,001st upvote here this is because of the magic nights in Arabien slowness you experience there? 😂😂

Hehe! I like the sound of that. I just had to google it.
I'll be on limited power over the next 3 days, but have a lovely weekend:)))

No, you dont know the One Thousand and One Nights fairytales? 🤔 Can it be?
However I wish you a great "natural power" Weekend 😘

😅 No, I don't know that fairytale at all.
Something is wrong with my brain and I've never liked fairytales or fantasy. As a kid, I never watched cartoons, and I read only a few fantasies like Cinderella, Three Little Bears, and Rapunzel. I cannot think of many others, as I have always been into self-help books and real-life stories from a young age.
The outdoors was where you could always find me. Sometimes I feel like I missed out on a lot, compared to my sisters who watched all these things, but it was like torture for me to sit down and watch television.🙃😍

Its a collection of short stories. Origin dates back to 8th century. They we're written (or rather told back then) over the centuries by different authors.
Every night Schehrezâd tells her King a fairytale so that she can stay alive until the next night.
So its many different stories, the most Common known out of it are Aladin, Sindbad and Ali Baba 🙂

This reminded me that I never read the complete collection but bought it years ago...

Decided to read them now 🙂 a Story each evening. 😂 Will have finished in 3 years 😘😁

Aladin, Sindbad and Ali Baba 🙂

Yes, I know of these...

Every night Schehrezâd tells her King a fairytale so that she can stay alive until the next night.

Somehow, I think I watched this with my mother-in-law last Christmas... It sounds familiar 😆😅

a Story each evening.

Sounds like a good plan.

Will have finished in 3 years 😘😁

It would take me a decade 🤣... My skin is already itching at the idea 🙃😂
