Being a teacher is something I'd not stop loving. For someone who has the passion to help others learn something new, I'm always excited when I am to teach and each time, I enjoy the excitement on the faces of my students.
I took up private home lessons as a part of my activities. I work online in the mornings and by 3.pm, I hurry to teach my students. I go to three different houses. So, by 3 pm to 4 pm, I teach the first student in their house, then I spend an hour or more with the others as well.
It has kept me engaged, and also helped me continue with my passion.
Some days ago, a parent called me while I was going for my private lessons. She explained to me that her boy couldn't read and she needed a private tutor for him. He is in secondary school and she was really concerned.
We concluded on the fee and agreed to start the following week.
The day I started, I asked him to read a passage from his textbook but it turns out that he could hardly pronounce a three lettered words. It was that bad!
For me, I already knew what next I should do to help him. Not knowing how to read in this age isn't something that one should hear of.
As one who studied English and Phonetics even while I was still single, I didn't see it as an hardwork, teaching him.
So, I told him to write down the 26 alphabets in his notebook. I know he was shocked. To him, he might have felt he didn't need it. I explained to him.
We started with the lettee sounds and gradually, started blending the sounds together to form a word. We started with two letter words like 'A+T=AT.
The next day, I added other consonant sounds and vowel sounds, too. I gave him a short reading exercise and he did well. I encouraged him to keep it on.
Yesterday, I taught him the 'Magical E'.
The magical e worked well for him. When he found it hard to pronounce a word, he would just blend the sounds together and viola! He gets the right pronunciation.
He performed really well today. He can read simple words, unlike before.
As a teacher, I am always excited when I see my students thriving. It gives me a sense of fulfillment.
I'm looking forward to more improvement from him.
Thank you for reading through.
