Hello community members. I'm so excited to be writing here again. Today I would love to share my opinion on the issue of "what I ordered vs what I got " in regards to fashion.
I believe most of us if not all have had this unpleasant experience with their tailor, where the tailor sews an entirely different outfit from the original design or an outfit that the fitting is very bad. As much as this is directed to ladies, it's also applicable to the guys. Well without further ado let's begin.
Have you heard this phrase before? "Leave corset for who slim" it's a phrase in pidgin English which implies that corset is suitable for slim people....
As funny as this may sound, it is the truth.
In my little experience as a fashion designer, l discovered that up to 70% of "what I ordered vs what I got" is not entirely the tailors fault. I found out that while most clients are ignorant of their body shape, some clients are fully aware yet they choose to sew outfits that does not fit their body shape. Please, ladies don't be under any unnecessary pressure to slay in an outfit when it does not fit your body shape. Know what works for you and what doesn't, remember you are all beautiful, wonderful and fearfully made. No woman better pass the other, just find which fashion trend fits you. As we progress I will explain the various body shapes to help us.
NB: The body shape of a woman is determined by her body measurements which is the bust circumference, waist circumference and hip circumference and it varies in proportion depending on the individual, that's why we have different body shapes.
The Hour glass shape
Ladies with hourglass shape are usually bursty and curvy, they have a large bust, a well defined waist and large hips which is proportional to the bust. That means the bust and the hip are similar in width.
The Inverted triangle
Ladies with inverted body shape usually have broad shoulders, large bust and small hips, the waist is bigger than the hips. That means the shoulder and the bust is the biggest part of your body measurements, it gets smaller as it runs down to your waist and then to your hips.
The Triangle or pear shape
In contrast to the inverted triangle, ladies with triangle body shape usually have narrow shoulders, smaller bust compared to their waist and hips. That means they have a well defined waistline and fuller hips and thighs.
Round or apple shape
Ladies with round body shape usually have large bust and narrow hips with an undefined waistline. That means their bust is large compared to their hips, they have fuller midsection ( area around the stomach).
The rectangle shape
Ladies with rectangle body shape usually have equal bust waist and hip measurements. That means your bust and hip measurements are almost the same with only a few inch difference. You don't have a defined waistline rather it runs down from your bust down to your hips.
This post is not to throw shades or body shame anybody rather to guide women on how to dress and style themselves. Fashion is not rigid, it is very flexible anyone can dress the way they like. But before you wear any outfit or sew any outfit try to picture yourself in the outfit first, don't just pick any design online and quickly run to your tailor to sew it for you without first picturing how you are going to look in it. Ladies your body shape is unique and peculiar to you, not all outfits fit you. For ladies with smaller hips, you can always go for baggy pants or hip padding in case of corset, this is to add more volume to your hips.
On the other hand,as fashion designers we must understand that not everything is about money, your integrity and reputation as a fashion designer matters and it's even superior to making money. Before you sew for any clients, conduct a consultation sessions with them, explain to them about their body shape and come up with the best solution. Any clients that insist on sewing outfits that does not fit their body shape please politely decline. Don't just take any job just because the pay is huge, focus more on satisfying and bringing out the best look for your client and watch them come back over and over again to sew more outfits.
In conclusion, no woman's body shape is perfect than the other. Don't allow social media to drive you into low self esteem. You are all beautiful with your unique body types, whether hourglass, triangle, inverted triangle, apple or rectangle shape. Your body is not a disadvantage whatsoever, the Almighty designed you himself in his own image. And to my fellow fashion designers please don't use these as loopholes to sew rubbish for your client, claiming it is their body shape that is the problem. Always identify your clients body shape, have a chat with them and suggest outfits that is most suitable for their body shapes.
