THE DO’S AND DON’TS FOR HARMONIOUS LIVING IN OUR NEIGHBOURHOOD

Neighbourhood etiquette is very essential in maintaining a harmonious living in the society, our neighbourhood ought to be a place where residents feel safe, comfortable and valued. Just like the quote rightly puts it “A neighbour is one who listens over the fence, but does not climb over it”, It means that your neighbour is someone who shows interest in your life and at the same time respects your privacy or personal boundaries. This quote is definitely true and it spells out the reasons why neighbourhood etiquette is very necessary.

1.Respecting your neighbour’s property and personal space is very important, in as much as we want to show interest and care towards our neighbours, we should not overstep our boundaries, try as much as possible to avoid entering their property or utilizing their things without permission. You should also know when and when not to interfere in their personal matters, by these you earn respect and it shows how responsible you are.

2.Offering assistance and help is a good etiquette we need to imbibe, neighbours ought to be supportive to one another, no one is an Island we all need people around us, rather than isolating ourselves we ought to be of help , some little act of kindness, polite manners, show of love , showing gratitude is necessary for maintaining a harmonious neighbourhood.

Let me share an experience I once had, we had neighbours who lived close by, the little thing I did was always to greet them cheerfully every time I see them around, I never knew I was noted for habitually showing a cheerful smile while greeting them, one evening when I returned from church it was a bit late and I was walking alone along our street.

Some group of men walked towards me and stopped me, I tried moving away but one of them immediately grabbed my bag which contained my phone and some money, I did not know what else they planned on doing, I was so helpless I screamed and immediately I saw one of my neighbour hitting one of them from behind, he collected back my bag and the rest of them ran away, I breathed in relief.

My neighbour later told me that he heard my voice from afar and was able to detect that it was me and so he immediately came to help. I wonder what would have happened if he did not come to help me that night.

3.Dispose your waste properly: we should learn the act of proper waste disposal, your neighbours garden is not the right place to dispose your waste, trash your waste or you burn them, do not dump them in your neighbour’s property as these may result in conflict in the neighbourhood.

4.Do not be disrespectful: being disrespectful to the people around you will only make them avoid you when you need their support. Treat your neighbours with respect and kindness. Do not use derogatory comment or use offensive words with them.

5.Maintain a healthy communication with your neighbors; do not ignore them, learn to interact and address issues promptly without using violent means, a healthy communication helps to build a healthy neighborhood.

These are just but a few of some etiquette we should and should not display in our neighborhood in order to maintain a harmonious society.

I also want to use this medium to invite my friends to take part in this initiative
