I have already mentioned in previous posts that I am very interested and willing to travel to other cities in my country with the intention of capturing through photographs structures of architectural interest and then share them with the community. Last week I made a post of a square in the city of Naguanagua, Carabobo state, that city is about 50 kilometers from where I live and that was a very similar approach to what I want to do. So yesterday I decided to go to three squares in some of the municipalities of Aragua state, the idea was to check if there were elements of architectural interest and then bring them here.
One of the largest municipalities in the state of Aragua is the municipality of Santiago Mariño, it is located northeast of the city of Maracay and has a large population, the city of Turmero is perhaps the most important reference of the municipality and precisely there is the Santiago Mariño square. My first impression is that it is a square with wide spaces, there are many trees that generate very convenient shadows for those who choose to visit the square, the spaces for walking are quite large and there are also several places to sit. In the photos you will notice that there are already Christmas elements in the ornamentation of the square, and well, it is understandable taking into account that we are already close to Christmas and the end of the year.
One of the first sights entering the plaza from the south is a small circular structure of eight columns that has two small angels on top, it has a triangular structure in the center which creates a perfect contrast from the visual point of view. The columns have a colonial style and are painted white, I think it is an ideal structure to take a good picture.
Immediately next to the aforementioned structure is the headquarters of the Municipal Council of the Santiago Mariño municipality, a building that also has colonial architectural elements such as the columns, the triangular roof, the red tiles, the small windows, among other things that take our minds back to older times. I think it is a very well built structure with a very decent dimension.
I must say that the following is a great peculiarity, most of the main squares in my country are called Plaza Bolivar, however, in this case it is not precisely the hero Simon Bolivar the protagonist of this square, but Santiago Mariño, another very important hero of this country, perhaps the reason is obvious and is that the municipality is named after him, but this is not an exception that I see so often in other squares in the country. And well, we can see a life-size monument with some regional flags on the back of the statue.
Last but not least, we have the church Nuestra Señora de La Candelaria, this structure is perhaps the most striking of this square and rightly so. It preserves an accentuated colonial style and is in a very good state of maintenance, it has three wooden doors (like many of this style) and a clock tower with a bell tower. I think this church has nothing to envy to others in the state of Aragua, unfortunately it was not open to the public to view the inside and reaffirm my comment.
The Santiago Mariño square in the city of Turmero surprised me, I did not expect it to be so big and have so much to offer, while I was there I noticed that visitors were always at ease and that there was a lot of commerce around, no doubt it is a place with a lot of activity. In the following weeks I will share more about my visit to the different squares of the municipalities of Aragua state. I hope this post has been to your liking, greetings!
