Walking through the streets of my city has become an accumulation of mixed feelings, among the beautiful structures influenced by the Spanish colonial style, the beautiful temples and squares, we have some buildings in a state of abandonment, like this beautiful historical heritage, which struggles to stay standing.

This is the House, Gallery 1890, an old shopping center, which was an icon in the city, has been abandoned for some years. But we can still appreciate part of its facade, full of beautiful architectural details that made it look beautiful.

Now, it is one more of the buildings downtown, which shows us the harsh reality of neglect and abandonment, it is a pity, because it is a historical heritage, a great work that, surely, is worth recovering.

Caminar por las calles de mi ciudad se ha convertido en un cúmulo de sentimientos encontrados, entre las hermosas estructuras influenciadas por el estilo colonial español, los bellos templos y plazas, tenemos algunas edificaciones en estado de abandono, como este bello patrimonio histórico, que lucha por mantenerse de pie.

Se trata de la Casa, Galería 1890, un antiguo centro comercial, que fue todo un icono en la ciudad, desde hace algunos años se encuentra abandonado. Pero aún podemos apreciar parte de su fachada, llena de hermosos detalles arquitectónicos, que la hacían lucir preciosa.

Ahora, es una más de las edificaciones del centro, que nos muestra la cruda realidad de la desidia y el abandono, es una lástima, porque es un patrimonio histórico, una gran obra que, seguramente, valga la pena recuperar.

I remember, I had the opportunity to enter a couple of times, here, there was a very popular cafe, it was a very busy place, with an inner courtyard and around it some stores, one of the best known was a Japanese store.

On its main door we can still see the year of its foundation, the one that gave it precisely the name when it became a shopping center "1890" and we can still see the details of the cornice, very beautiful.

Now the vegetation takes over the facade, in the best style of fairy tales, we see the branches protruding from its windows and roofs, I wonder if inside, there is still a princess.

Recuerdo, que tuve la oportunidad de entrar un par de veces, aquí, existía un café muy popular, era un sitio muy concurrido, con un patio interior y alrededor de él algunas tiendas, una de las más conocidas era una tienda japonesa.

En su puerta principal aún podemos ver el año de su fundación, el que le dio precisamente el nombre cuando se convirtió en Centro comercial “1890” y aún podemos ver los detalles de la cornisa, muy hermosa.

Ahora la vegetación se apodera de la fachada, al mejor estilo de los cuentos de hadas, vemos las ramas sobresalir de sus ventanas y techos, me pregunto si dentro, aún estará alguna princesa.

Estuve indagando un poco en internet, quería encontrar una foto de esta edificación, la encontré en el catálogo del patrimonio cultural venezolano, cuando se trata de estructuras antiguas, seguro encuentro información en este libro del Arquitecto Francisco Sesto Novás y esta no fue la excepción, efectivamente fue construida en 1890, con un diseño de estilo Republicano. Inicialmente, fue la residencia de alguna familia adinerada, cien años después paso a ser el centro comercial que conocí en mi niñez.

I do not know how much time has passed since it closed its doors, but time does not pass in vain, although it is a sample of the resistance of the walls of tapia, walls made with rammed earth. To think about that is incredible, truly the resistance of the earthen houses is something that surprises me and especially because Merida is a seismic state.

I have always believed that structures always need human warmth, when a house is left alone, its deterioration is much more aggressive and in a few years, it will surely be in ruins, something that does not happen when we inhabit it or are aware of them.

No sé cuanto tiempo ha pasado desde que cerró sus puertas, pero el tiempo no pasa en vano, aunque es una muestra de la resistencia de las paredes de tapia, paredes realizadas con tierra apisonada. Pensar en eso es increíble, de verdad que la resistencia de las casas de tierra es algo que me sorprende y especialmente porque Mérida es un Estado sísmico.

Siempre he creído que las estructuras necesitan siempre del calor humano, cuando una casa queda sola, su deterioro es mucho más agresivo y en pocos años, seguramente estará en ruinas, cosa que no pasa, cuando la habitamos o estamos pendiente de ellas.

Timely maintenance and restoration are the key to keeping these architectural gems functional and beautiful for much longer. I love it, when they restore a place and respect the original design, after all these treasures are part of the identity of the region, of its landscaping, it is worth preserving them and honoring their history.

I understand that they had plans to demolish it and build a new shopping mall, but when it comes to Historic Heritage, legal things get complicated, so there are no permits for that. For now, all that remains is to admire what is left of it.

El mantenimiento y la restauración a tiempo son la clave para mantener estas joyas arquitectónicas funcionales y bonitas por mucho más tiempo. Me encanta, cuando restauran un lugar y respetan el diseño original, al fin de cuenta estos tesoros forman parte de la identidad de la región, de su paisajismo, vale la pena preservarlas y hacerle honor a su historía.

Tengo entendido que tenían planes de demolerla y construir un nuevo Centro Comercial, pero cuando se trata de Patrimonios Históricos, las cosas legales, se complican, así que no existen los permisos para eso. Por ahora, solo resta admirar lo que queda de ella.
