English versión

In the historic center of Old Havana, where history and architecture blend, is the Plaza de Armas, the oldest of the four main squares of the city. It is also the central point around which some of the most important buildings of the colonial era were erected.

Currently in the center of the Plaza is the statue of Carlos Manual de Céspedes, Cuban hero known for being the first to initiate the struggle for the independence of Cuba against Spain. This monument has been part of this square since 1955; previously there was a statue of Fernando VII, King of Spain from 1808 to 1833. The name of the Plaza de Armas is due to the numerous military exercises and practices that took place there.

Throughout the place we can enjoy abundant vegetation, which is very pleasing to the eye. The square is surrounded by leafy trees that provide a very pleasant shade. There are also several stone benches that are almost never empty. I find it very nice in its design that it has several water fountains, which provide, in addition to a very pleasing aesthetic, a relaxing and peaceful atmosphere. In each corner of the square there are large lampposts with an elaborate design, which give the place the charm of other times.

This square is a very popular place, it is always surrounded by people and many foreign visitors who come to admire the beauty of our city. In order to preserve its cobblestone streets, the circulation of automobiles is prohibited in this area, so you can walk freely in any corner. It is a very peaceful place.

Around this square are some of the most important buildings of the ancient city, such as the Palacio de los Capitanes Generales and the Palace of the Second Cape.

The Palace of the General Captains was where the highest representatives of the Spanish colonial government in Cuba resided. This building is one of the great exponents of the baroque architecture of the island, its construction is of quarry stone, has a facade where high columns and elegant arches are distinguished, as well as a grandiose wooden gate. At the present time, it is the Museum of the City.

This magnificent building once housed the office of Eusebio Leal Spengler, Havana's renowned historian. In his honor, at the entrance of the Palace is a bronze sculpture of the beloved and respected historian of the city. The sculpture imitates his always serene gait, always greeting everyone who crossed his path.

On one side of the Plaza is the Palacio del Segundo Cabo, with another imposing stone façade, adorned with beautiful arches under a wooden roof and a huge door at the main entrance. In this place was for a time the Senate of the Republic of Cuba, before the National Capitol was built. At present, after being restored it was converted into a museum.

Other sites of interest surrounding the Plaza de Armas are the Castle of the Royal Force, a large stone fortress at the entrance to the Bay, which was the first defense of the city, and the Templete, the chapel where the First Mass was celebrated when the Villa was founded. There is also the current Hotel Santa Isabel, former residence of the Counts of Santovenia.

I had the opportunity to walk through this place. Just remembering it makes my skin crawl. What a special moment, the people, the antique book sales, the artists, the tourists... This is what I love about Havana, it has it all. Thank you for taking us for a walk

I didn't see the sale of the books, it seems they moved them. Havana is very beautiful, I understand your feeling.

Thank you, I'm glad you told me that the photos are good 😅, I know you really like Havana, it's a beautiful place.

It is a really beautiful place, to have a good time enjoying the surroundings. It has a lot of history, like all of Old Havana, and impressive architecture. I'm glad you liked it.
