Hi all ππ»
With my next post into your Architecture+Design Community I want to show you a beautiful building in the city of Madrid, Spain. It is located in the large El Ritiro Park.
I have never been in a park this largeβ¦ it is amazing! How lucky are the residents of Madrid to have this so close by. I would visit many, many times π
The building is the Palacio de Cristal ~ The Glass Palace.
Here is the location on Google maps:
Look for the 2 green flags.
I zoomed in a little so you can view the entire park better.
More information about the park you can find In this webpage!
It states: βEl Retiro is one of the largest parks of the city of Madrid, Spain. The park belonged to the Spanish Monarchy until the late 19th century, when it became a public park.
In 2021, Buen Retiro Park became part of a combined UNESCO World Heritage Site with Paseo del Prado.
The Buen Retiro Park is a large and popular 1.4 km2 (350 acres) park at the edge of the city centre. A magnificent park, filled with beautiful sculptures and monuments, galleries, a peaceful lake, and a host to a variety of events, it is one of Madrid's premier attractions. The park is entirely surrounded by the present-day city.β
You can wander there for hours on end, even in the summer as there are so many trees for shade π₯°
Letβs go back to the Glass Palace!
I will tell you a little bit about this building as we walk along itβ¦
My photographs are taken by my iPhone on 13 March 2022.
(as my DSLR camera died on our last trip / to Cuba)
We walked through the entrance gates and first came passed the El Retiro βLakeβ and Estanque Grande del Retiro. The large monumentβ¦ I will post about it later, one day π
little teaser π
We walked furtherβ¦
When we reached a sandy wide path, the Palacio de Cristal popped up between the large trees.
Ooo exciting. As I know this structure is soooo beautiful. I wanted to visit it for years.
Little bit closer. We see the side of the building and its iron frame work.
More clearly now. Itβs so large. The details are amazing. The glass panes are vast. (Canβt fit the entirely building in my close by photos)
It used to be a botanical garden, but is currently used as exhibition space. When we were there they were setting up a new exhibition. So it was closed and we couldnβt enter. (I would have liked that, to see the internal structuresβ¦ maybe another time)
Detail photograph. You can see through the glass the roof structure if you look closely. It was mesmerising π
Look also at all the details from the facade.
Letβs walk around it.
Half way around we see this. You can clearly look through the entire pavilion/ building.
Take it all in for a moment!
It has the shape of a CROSS.
View from above from Google maps:
Walking further around it⦠the trees reflect in all the glass panes.
The time is already 18:55h so it is getting darker.
Next to the building we find this pond.
Ducks, swans, birds are around.
We reach now also the entrance. I walk up the steps to have a peek inside.
This is my view.
Behind me the pond when I look over it from high above on the steps.
Letβs walk past it and along the pond, around it for a better view.
Itβs beautifulβ¦
By now Iβm soooo hoping there will be a sunset with amazing colours. Wouldnβt that be great. When it reflects in this building. π€π»π
Little bit further along. It looks so airy.
Through the trees across the pond.
Here we waited for a whileβ¦ if the sunset π
would be visible.
Little further away.
No, no sunset at this spot.
We decided to walk back to the El Ritiro lake and the large monument. And we end our walk here.
More information about the Palacio de Cristal ~ Glass Palace you can find In this webpage!
It states: βThe Palacio de Cristal ("Glass Palace") is a conservatory located in Madrid's Buen Retiro Park.
The Palacio de Cristal, in the shape of a Greek cross, is made almost entirely of glass set in an iron framework on a brick base, which is decorated with ceramics. Its cupola makes the structure over 22 metres high.
The Palacio de Cristal was, alongside the PabellΓ³n Central, one of the main venues of the 1887 Philippines Exposition.
The cast-iron frame was manufactured in Bilbao. The structure was designed in a way that would allow it to be re-erected on another site. However, the building has remained on the original site, next to a lake, and has been restored to its original appearance. It is no longer used as a greenhouse, and is currently used for art exhibits.
The Crystal Palace belongs to the Reina SofΓa Museum, and is one of its exposition centresβ.
