When I designed and build our salon table 😊

in #hive-1787083 years ago

Hi all,

With my first post into your Architecture+Design Community I want to show you the salon (coffee) table I designed and build out of used pallet wood.
It was July 2018.

I don’t have all progress photos, but I have a few so you get an idea of what my thoughts were during the process and my design. Even how it changed along the way. In future projects and furniture designs I will take plenty of photos to show you 😉

At this time we were living in Sayalonga, Spain

Here you see the Final result.

Let’s have a look at my design and how I build it :

First I took a few pallets apart and sanded the wooden pieces I could save well… but I try to leave as many as possible nice marks, paint colours and stamped lettering for a rustic feel in the wood and the furniture piece.

I don’t saw the nailed part pieces off, as many would do when they take apart a pallet. I like to try to get the entire wooden slat off. So I have some nice rustic features, from where once the nails were.

I bend it carefully with some other wooden pieces until they pop off. Sometimes it takes quite some work and use of heavier tools. Like a crowbar or a very large thick screwdriver I have and a hammer. I have not found an easier way that works for me, but this one works, when I dismantle an entire pallet. Or even a few pallets.

It also takes some muscle power hahaha 💪🏻🔨

You see here a photo I took while I started to sand.

After finishing the sanding I had a nice selection that was left. Different thicknesses too. I have used them in different other projects.

My initial thought would be : I make a table with draws I had from a while ago (left over from a cabinet I couldn’t save) that one day I could use in one of my furniture projects.

You see I have quite a selection of diverse wood sizes.

I used this given, the draws I wanted to integrate, to create the size of the table top that would work with adding the draws to it. You see that clearly in the photo, I was looking at what pieces to use.

Next steps are missing but let’s go further.

Here you see I constructed the salon table with the wood pieces I had. I added cast iron / caster wheels under the 4 corners. These are quite heavy. The diameter for the wheels is 14 cm.
The size of the table is 120 x 52 x 56 cm.

You see I didn’t add the draws. So my design changed.
But somehow I wasn’t liking it… it misses something.
I looked through the wooden slabs what I had left and got an other idea.

I added a bottom part with 4 long slats that just fitted. It had to be 😇😎
So this is my final design for the salon table.
Btw. I put in all the screws to hold it together, without seeing any heads. They are put in from the bottom side, when You look at the table standing.

Little detail photo of a corner.

At the moment after a few moves to other houses and apartments in Spain. The use of this salon table changed over time.
From salon table to tv stand to salon table again.
It is quite versatile… 😊 at the moment we have it set up again as a salon table.

Here some photos when it was a tv stand.
You can also see I designed/ build another larger salon table out of more reclaimed wood from pallets . (that one doesn’t exist anymore)

The natural design and color of the pallet give it a natural vibe. Nice job. I am excited to see more of your creation. Greetings from the Philippines!

Thank you so much @afterglow 😊
Yes, I love the natural look of the wood. I didn’t paint over it. It is still “raw” from after the sanding.
Greetings from Spain 👋🏻

You're welcome (^_^)

amazing,, and the palette looks so luxurious with an amazing design.

Thank you so much @deltasteem 😊

Looks cool. Can I order one? ;)
No, really you did some great work and its much better than the cheap Ikea stuff.

Thanks a lot @betterthanhome 😉
Yes, my thoughts exactly 😎

Wow beautiful design, you do a good job, congratulations. Regards

Thank you so much @carmary 😊

A truly versatile salon table! It's also the ideal coffee table for a living space or lounge area where social gatherings happen. Aside from its rustic aesthetic, I simply love the natural grain patterns of the wooden pallets as they add to the overall beauty of the furniture.

Greetings @littlebee4, and a warm welcome to the Architecture+Design Community. 😊

Thank you so much @storiesoferne 😊 for the warm welcome and nice comment.
I decided not to paint or protect the wood after I had sanded it. I just loved the look of it.
It is changing its colour slowly over time now. I like it, and yes we are careful with drinks etc. so far nothing was spilled in the years 😉🤞🏻

Sweet! As long as the wood is taken care of, it will surely last a long time. Looking forward to more remarkable posts about architecture and design from you soon. Cheers! 😊

Thank you @storiesoferne, hopefully it will.
Have a wonderful day 😊☀️

(Thank you so much, That is nice to hear. Have a wonderful day too.)

Aspetto tanti altri tuoi post!!!!! ❤❤❤❤❤

Looks awesome. The idea of repurposing wood is just fantastic. And if you ever get tired of the table you can always dismantle and repurpose.

Thank you so much @mrprofessor 😊
Exactly, love doing that. I found them (the pallets) along streets in the industrial parts here. They are just thrown in garbage containers or along the streets. Everybody could collect them for free but not many do here. You can find some good ones in between bad ones.
After sanding the wood is just amazing. It’s worth the work that is involved by dismantling them.

Yes I could easily, but after a few years I still like it 🥰

I especially like the wheels you added. They look vintage.

Thanks, they are. Found them long ago in my parents shed.
