The everyday increase in overwhelming amount of accident rocking the architecture and design construction, especially in my country (Nigeria) has called for a critical study into the causalities and the possible available safety measures to reduce the causalities.
Many people have met their untimely death during the course of their work in building construction sites while some have turned crippled due to site construction-related injuries.
There are different kinds of site accident that have become rampant among my people here in Nigeria, having a critical review of those incidents for possible safety measures will not only reduce the accident on site but it will further create more awareness about the various types of accident in building architecture and their possible safety measures that should be considered while working in building construction site.
Falls from heights
It is not a news again that skyscrapers and other top buildings are dominating the building construction architecture, as such accident resulting from falling from height is becoming rampant nowadays, falling from heights may also involve roofing accidents, falling via ladder accidents, scaffolding accidents, and falling via slips, or trips usually regarded as falling from the same level.
Safety Measures
Some of the safety measures for fall from heights both by humans as well as equipment includes the use of fall arrest, guard rails, fall safety nets, among others. It is the duty of employer to make sure all those aforementioned safety equipment are available for use by both skilled and non skilled laborers. Adequate training on how to effectively use the equipment should also be put in place.
Electrocution and physical contact with equipment and machinery
Many people have turned crippled due to their unnecessary contact with equipment, machinery, and electrical contact. The effect of this hazard can never be overlooked as it has retired a lot of people, both skilled and unskilled laborers from active service. It is the next casualty with higher percentage after fall from height.
Safety Measures
Employers should ensure there is daily inspection of all the equipment, machines and electrical materials including wiring and their connecting points, the inspection expert must make sure they are in good working condition and in accordance to the known standard. tool such as Personal protective equipment(PPE), face protection and wearing eye should be encouraged for use during on site construction.
Collapse of building due to the use of sub standard materials among other factors
Recently, the economic situation of the country has affected a lot of sector including building architecture and construction company in Nigeria, the industry has been sabotage and unqualified professionals, quacks and men of questionable characters have been using their influence and connection to get contracts, especially from government leading to the use of low quality materials, and unskilled laborers.
Safety Measures
Awareness should be made to sensitize both the government and other employers on the effect of giving out building and construction contract to the quacks and unqualified professional in the society.
Final Thought!
While the casualties in architecture and construction field keeps increasing, it has been noticed that most common victims, especially the brutally injured personnel were non-skilled construction laborers, roofers, carpenters and few new supervisors.
An effort should be made both by government, organizations and individuals towards reducing the aforementioned casualties.
